CSM: Evolution in Iraq's Insurgency..
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/csm/20050407/wl_csm/oinsurgents_1

" Attacks on US forces have dropped 22 percent since the Jan. 30 election, to about 40 a day, about the rate they were a year ago. In March, 36 US troops were killed, the lowest figure in a year, according to icasualties.org, which tracks casualties announced by the government.

But this week, four soldiers and a marine were killed - and Saturday's well-organized attack on Abu Ghraib prison, in which 40 US troops and 12 prisoners were injured, suggests that fighters may be shifting to fewer but better executed operations, including ones that directly engage US forces. "

Any parallels to Viet Nam here? My stepdad was in Southeast Asia from about 1961-65 and he said it seems similar to the VC insurgency. It seems the Iraqis are developing their attacks with more planning, more command and control, and using greater coordination of resources. I honestly believe the Abu Ghraib attack was a test of our response time and ability to effectively react to coordinated strikes.

3. Insurgency = Our Ticket Out of Iraq
Unfortunately, I think the Congress and White House are too stubborn to remove their control of Iraq (military bases, oil, you guys know the deal) unless there is a mass of American casualties. So many Iraqis are dying every day from war, disease, and starvation stemming from the occcupation...what do most Americans care about that?

Only American casualties will make us ever push to leave.

4. Or, hopefully, a mass movement here before the casualties
approach Vietnam levels.

5. Not until Bushie McSoccermom loses her son...
No one will care until it affects them personally, then it may be too late. We're a selfish country now.

6. I think the neocons desperately want a way out
never foresaw that everything wouldn't fall into place like Chalabi promised. But they've got no exit strategy, because all hell will break loose if we leave.

IMO, the insurgency has a clever plan. The US troops are super well-guarded. The insurgency hassles us, but primarily focuses on the Iraqi security forces, which at this rate, and under these circumstances, never will come together as a force. Their bet is that they will outlast us, exhaust our money and patience (not a bad bet--that's kind of our history). The homegrown forces won't be up to the task, and then they'll make their move.
