Terri Who?....A nation with Attention Deficit Disorder
Edited on Fri Apr-08-05 05:21 PM by Armstead
It seems so long ago, in a galaxie far, far away.

A young woman in a vegetive state became a national obsession. Her fate became the most important thing in the world. The only thing in the world. "We suffer with Terri" "Terri must be saved." "Terri is a national tragedy."

Her husband and relatives became like your next-door neighbors. Everywhere all the time. Every little nuance of their lives exsamined in microscopic detail. Pundits discussing them over and over.

Then she died. Story over. Next. The Pope. He died. The end of the world.

Terri? Old news. Who cares? Follow up? Nah, we don't care anymore.

Hard to believe it was only a week ago.

This fucking country has the attention span of a gnat. At least the leaders and media do.

1. That's what I was saying during the whole scandal.
Edited on Fri Apr-08-05 05:20 PM by LostInAnomie
By Nov. '06 it will be "Terri who?". By then a dozen scandals will come and go, plenty of time for the Repukes to steal another one.

2. That's a good thing.
Now w/ their followers not able to remember Terri, there will be no great push to get conservative judges on the SC, or any real support to break the backs of the judiciary, or the filibuster.

4. Heck, we'll have passed through 100 more obsessions by June
Terri Schiavo will be a Trivial Pursuit question by July

6. Schiavo got way too much coverage.
It's not a matter of attention deficit.

As you said, every minutia of the issue was picked over for weeks.

It's over.

BTW, "Talk of the Nation" did a whole hour on living wills today and had the head of FL Hospice as part of the discussion.

10. Last night I was flipping through the radio stations
I have XM, and Hannity & Colmes had Mrs. Schivao's brother and sister on, again. They were talking about how they're grieving and don't think it became a political issues. blah blah blah.

The Schiavo issue will be beat into our heads again when the autopsy results come out.

7. The only national tragedy was
Reagan abandoning alternative energy programs as early as 1982, claiming they were OBSOLETE.

Not a single president since has done ANYTHING to help. Many only compounded the problem by giving tax breaks for giant SUVs or rescinded federal speed limit laws, put into place by a Republican no less to curb the use of oil! My, how times change.

8. Fine with me, I was sick of hearing about it
Now I'm sick of the Pope death and funeral. There is plenty of other news in the world but try telling that to US news outlets.

11. You'll be reminded of her again in October

Somewhere, maybe in China, someone is making master molds for rubber Terri and Michael Schiavo masks. The kit will include a hospital gown with mock stomach tube hookup, sunglasses, mylar balloons, and stuffed toy animals. You will have to supply your own bed or wheelchair.

Remember, you read it here on DU first.

Did you know that the US is in TWO wars? It's wild I know but we actually have soldiers dying in Afghanistan and Iraq. Shhhh, don't pass it on. The fragile masses aren't ready for it.

16. NBC Nightly News tried to get it going again tonight
by giving a favorable approach to Tom Delay's requests for going after "activist judges". It was a dead issue until they started pushing it again.

drag us around from one death to the next. Same shit, just different color of emotional hype. Evil bastards...
