The American killed in the Egypt blast was from my hometown.
Kentwood is a beautiful town. True, it is a suburb in conservative West Michigan, but given the sense of community I feel around here, you probably wouldn't know it, and I don't think you would care.

That sense of community is a reason why I was very saddened to hear that the American identified in the blast in Cairo was from Kentwood, as were three of the eighteen injured.

Maybe Alex was a far-left liberal Democrat. Maybe he was a very staunch conservative. Maybe he was what we would call a fundamentalist Christian, or maybe not. I don't know, and quite frankly I don't care. I don't ever recall meeting him, though my brother might have known his brother Eric when they were on East Kentwood's track team.

What I do know is that I am saddened that this tragedy that seemed to occur thousands of miles away has hit so close to home.

I would ask that those of you who are inclined please send good vibes, prayers, etc., to the Mirandette, Ross, and Kiel families.

May Alex Rest In Peace.
