60. California has lots of boutique gasolines
Environmental rules in CA are such that they have lots of boutique gasolines. Many SMSAs have rules on special gasolines, because of environmental rules.

This is an anual issue In CA. Supply is restricted and demand goes way up in summer. In Red State areas the price is 2.15, in the cities with the special gasolines, the price, as we see here, gets up over $3. That extra 85 cents is partly the price of monopoly (large demand, short supply) and partly the necessary price of breathing better air.

SF has great transit. About 40% electric, IIRC. During rush hour the #14 bus runs every three minutes. I loved transit in SF. You litteraly didn't need a car there.

Bkes however, are a problem. Those hills are killer.

6. These higher gas prices...
...will soon be forcing up the price of everything delivered by truck, train, or plane. The cost of plastics will go up. The cost to make anything that uses a lot of power will skyrocket. Think your paycheck didn't go far last year? Things are going to get mighty tight here soon.

68. I work for an airline

and it's a grim time.

You are right about the fares, too...it's a highly irrational fare environment we're in right now!

What other service business would take such risks and over a long term (since Mar of 2002) knowingly sell for less than the cost of providing the services, just so that no other competitor would get the business?

What a cut throat war of attrition! And the workers and labor in general are the ones who suffer now. Eventually the flying public will suffer. Low cost carriers cannot possibly make up the capacity if one of the dinosaurs should fail (meaning that a 30 aircraft carrier couldn't come in and take over for a 3000 aircraft carrier).

For two years now you can fly for far cheaper than renting a car and driving the distance...

I'd better polish up my resume.

My son is an indepenent owner-operator. He hauls fresh produce from Florida to NYC and he and his fellow independents are raising their hauling rates. If they don't get the rates they need to move their trucks they will park them. A two or three work stoppage by indpendent truckers will bring this country to a grinding halt very quickly.

61. Absolutely.
Everything we consume is shipped on trucks at least twice, often 4 or more times.

I remember in the 80's a truckers protest about the condition of I70 in Pa. Truckers were driving it at 20MPH and it rendered the highway useless until the state committed to repair.

Can you imagine a 20MPH protest day? That would get the corporatista junta's attention. Shut down the interstates nationwide for a day, or even a few hours, and you would get their attention.

And that was with the Governor of Michigan at his side on stage when he did so. Got big laughs in Michigan. Something tells me they're not laughing in Michigan now.

Bush also stated that "We need an energy policy that encourages consumption." Well, we still have one, and we can see how well that's working out.

And then of course the "Hummer Deduction", which has mercifully lapsed. If you bought a vehicle over 6,000 pounds (which was essentially the Hummer or the Ford Excursion), you got an accelerated tax deduction for 75% of the vehicle, provided it was a "business expense". So, florists with Hummers, real estate brokers with Hummers, you get the picture. Something tells me that particular deduction isn't coming back, though with ChimpCo, you never can tell.

42. ** miscalculations
I am convinced the administration thought they would have pacified Iraq by now. With Iraqi oil flowing they would have OPEC on the ropes. The Saud-i's would go along to protect their American investments.

The problem is they placed a complete total screw up as Chairman of the Board **. They compounded the error by ignoring a replacement in 2004 who was somewhat more populist. Now they are facing complete disaster before 2006 and may loose everything.

Large numbers of Americans are not going to stand for loss of their living standards. The gas goes, the car goes, empty Supermarkets, kids no longer go to College, will finally unite a divided nation.

This time Poppy will not be able to bail out Junior.

When fundie Mom said "I cannot believe that gas prices are this high! How can we afford this! It's outrageous!"

My liberal friend said "Well, you can blame your war president for that. If Kerry were running the country, we'd be finding a way out of this mess, not burrowing deeper. And it's only going to get worse over the next four years. Hope you like lying in the bed you made."

Mind you, this is not a disrespectful teenager, she is 31.

She replied. "Not a goddamn word."

54. HAHAHA
I'm laughing about the ass saying we need to get the "stinking liberals" out of office!

Ehhh...what stinking Liberals? Wally O'Dell and Diebold made sure there were no stinking Liberals in office.

Hey ANUS! There ARE no stinking liberals in office.

AND - all the people I am hearing whining about gas prices are the Repukes. They are the ones that hate to pay for anything. They want it all handed to them.

My husband always laughs when he hears the asinine anti-environmentalist jargon from the misguided douche bags. He says "They hate the EARTH. Wow! What do you say to someone like that?!"

The neopukes really are a deranged bunch.

65. I say send 'em all to Yucca mountain
with the rest of the waste. They love pollution so much, THEY should allow toxins to be buried in their OWN backyards!

If there were not a SINGLE democrat in office, the repugs would still say that the world is in the state it's in because of the Libruls. They're the party of passing-the-buck; there's no personal responsibility there whasoever.

67. Thank you for your assessment.
And Bandar Bush didn't make a Saudi Pledge to keep oil prices down before the election either, right?

69. Find statistics for the oil produced in the Saudi Arabia by month
for the last 10 years and I will tell you if that is the case.

For Bush to have a considerable effect on the price he has to control either supply or demand for oil. Regarding supply you have economic theory to justify the major OPEC players' actions. Regarding demand American consumption has been increasing at a fairly steady rate since the second oil price spike (Canada's has also shown a similar pattern). China's increase in consumption has also helped to increase the demand.

My first statement was not an assessment. It was an assertion.

74. If I remember correctly the Saudi's have just less then a 20% share
of the production of oil. This would require a 5% increase in production to increase the total quantity supplied by 1%. Unless your source looked at this information, it just relies on heresy.

Even if he was able to lower the price for the election, it is quite a bit harder to raise the price then it is to lower it. Although you can lower the price through dumping at a small cost, it is difficult to raise the price because other people will just increase their own production.

To summarize; I'm skeptical about the Bush being able to lower the price and I don't believe it is feasible (or beneficial) for Bush to raise the gas prices intentionally.

70. 2.03 in Hoboken NJ
Full serve- no gas crisis here

:sarcasm:

Have you noticed that since the "oil president" took office, the basic price of gas has gone up 25c a year?

2001- $1
2002- $1.25
2003- $1.50
2004- $1.75
2005- $2

It usually goes up to about 25c more (in NJ) then falls down to the lower figure. So I expect if this pattern continues that the gas prices will go back to about $2.
