THIS is MODEST? "Charles, Camilla Wed in Modest Ceremony"-ABC
Edited on Sat Apr-09-05 03:29 PM by Steve_DeShazer
<snip>

For the wedding ceremony, the bride wore an oyster silk basket weave coat with a herringbone stitch and a matching chiffon dress. She also wore a matching straw and lace hat with feather details.

Charles, in contrast to the military uniform he wore for his first wedding to Diana, was dressed in formal morning wear.

The hall was lined with jasmine and lily of the valley known to symbolize the return of happiness.

<snip>

Security was very tight. In addition to sharpshooters on rooftops, plainclothes officers moved around in the crowd, dogs sniffed for bombs, and normally unarmed police carried handguns in the streets around Windsor Castle.

Charles, Camilla Wed in Modest Ceremony

WINDSOR, England (AP) - Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles were married Saturday in a modest civil ceremony at the 17th century Guildhall, and the second marriage for each was blessed by the Church of England as the royals knelt before Archbishop of Canterbury in a majestic ceremony beneath the soaring arches of the Gothic St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.

<snip>

Charles and Camilla confessed ``manifold sins and wickedness'' - words from the Book of Common Prayer, as Archbishop Rowan Williams blessed their union. They pledged to be faithful in their marriage, then walked from the cathedral to greet the huge crowd assembled behind police barriers on the manicured grounds of the ancient fortress, first associated with William the Conqueror, who invaded from France in 1066.

Charles and Camilla left in a black Rolls-Royce for a reception where they were greeted the 800 guests, including Prime Minister Tony Blair, in the castle's State Apartments.

This just makes me laugh, as my wife and I were married in a converted elevator shaft by a clerk in tennis shoes. The license cost fifteen bucks, and we spent a weekend at the beach for our honeymoon. Next year we will celebrate twenty years of marriage.

Our only regret is that our gay friends can't do the same.

So much for the working class.

on edit to add:

But for the actual wedding ceremony, which was held earlier in the day, Camilla chose a swirl of a dress in cream silk topped by a matching coat.

The outfit was crowned with a stylish and intensely feminine straw hat overlaid with ivory French lace and trimmed with a fountain of feathers.

Charles' Clarence House office said the dress designers Robinson Valentine wanted a "crisp clean look with subtle detailing" for the civil ceremony at Windsor's town hall.

The royal wedding rings were made of Welsh gold taken the Clogau St. David's mine and the River Mawdach in the Kings Forest, Clarence House said.

1. Good luck to them and BFD
An 800-guest wedding reception is about standard for Long Island ... or South Philly, for that matter.

And in Boston, it's not "manifold sins and wickedness", it's "manifold wicked sins, ya ree-tahd."

5. Why is Camilla's looks becoming such an object of scorn? What is obvious
is she loves Charles and he loves her in return.Isn't that the purpose of a marriage? I think both Charles and Camilla deserve our respect and appreciation for putting their love for each other above these superficial considerations.

8. I might have respected them if they did this to begin with, rather
than putting a deferential young woman through a miserable marriage first.

20. Agree MJ. Why didn't Charles marry her in the beginning?
Bec he wanted to "fool around" first...makes me sick.

The worst thing I ever heard was when Charles was on TV saying that he "never loved" Diana. That was totally uncalled for. Why say that? Just to be cruel.

He didn't have the b*lls to stand up to his mother and father concerning marrying Diana...so I guess he decided to "fake it." Shame on him...Diana wasn't faking it - she sincerely loved him from what I can tell.

These two (C & C) make me sick. They can do what they want..but the hurt they has caused is unforgivable.

22. Another Coward
Prince Charles is just as much a coward as the bush whacker. If this is the woman he has always loved, he should have married her in the first place. If he had, perhaps a lovely young woman might still be alive and his children would not be motherless.

29. easy to condemn & judge when you don't know the facts
and we have no clue as to court intrigue and so forth ....all the supposed rumors of great grandparents having affairs with each other...illegitmate family members attending the wedding...Queen Mother throwing so many obstacles in their way...Charles being too young to stand up to her...who knows??

I was and am, infinitely sorry about Diana but I say good for them both if this love has lasted all these years. I wish them the best. who am I to judge another?

3. By the standards of the royalty in Thailand,it is indeed modest. I have
personally witnessed the wedding of a Thai princess, where the groom rode an elephant decked, not just with flowers but rubies and diamonds, and a sixty piece band walked ahead of the elephant. When this entourage met with a similar procession on the bride's side, both the grrom and bride walked together inside a palace where a Hindu ceremony officiated by 100 priest conducted the ceremony chanting verses from the Rig Veda the 3500 year old Hindu sacred text.

When the ceremonies were over, the King ordered free dinner for all the people( more than 100,000 of them).

I would say, Charles and Camilla did have a modest ceremony!

13. Yes. And another thing....
Some DUer's are really having problems with Chuck and Cam today. :wtf:

Geesh, at least if I just royally choose not to have a life, I'll choose the side of happiness ya' goofs. I wish them (the Prince of Wales and the Dutchess of Cornwall) well, just because, it's really none of my business to wish them otherwise. And I took notes for those DUers who brought such hatred to the early morning live-du-bloggers watching this morning. You are really the ones who have no life, imho. Not to mention, your quotes were ugly and deserve to be put out of context on your proclaimed "freeper" sites. Hope that made sense ! If not, I don't give a nucking futs.

Move along....nothing to see here....<snork>...get it n'yet?

Oh so now they are going to be faithful? LOL! After screwing around for the last, what 20 years?

I thought. I don't know about that hat though. Only silk would behave this way--heavy upholstry brocade and a body stuffed into it is Laura's unfortunate choice.

28. Aside from the photo above, this was almost the ONLY time I saw them smile
during the whole ceremony and afteward. I watched the footage repeatedly on the news today, and they both seemed so bored and
ho-hum about it all. After all the time they'd waited, you'd think...

Compared to Di's wedding...with all it's hopefulness (no matter how ingenuine)...this felt so "flat" and ordinary. Certainly not the "love of one's life"...marrying one's "soul mate."

I predict the marriage is "ill-fated." They both have some heavy karma to pay for their cruel treatment of Di (and possibly even her "offing" in 1997)...and I think the fate of their ACTUAL, long-awaited marriage will be well worth watching.

Plus, Charles refused to sign a "pre-nup"...against the advisement of his attorneys. He said he trusts Camilla?! Guys, what do you think? Is that a mug you can trust with the British jewels?

I'm going for some popcorn. Be right back...

40. Wow, that was an ugly post.
What difference does it make what "feelings" you could pick up on through your teevee screen? You think they give a shit?

The only two people affected by how a wedding ceremony feels are the people getting married. How do you know it wasn't an absolutely beautiful ceremony for them?

As for them not smiling enough for you, I'm sure they'll try much harder next time to make you happy.

19. It is modest by the jaded standards of the corporate media.
They have seen popes, bishops and dignitaries decked out in lavish dress, they witness the red carpet parade of overdone excesses and are paid exorbitant salaries to repeat what every other news show repeats. To the corporate media Charles and Camilla's wedding was modest. To the rest of us, it would have been beyond our means. Glad to see the British spend their money on the poor and downtrodden. Nice to know it's not just Americans who waste their money on excessive displays of wealth.

Too bad they had to mess with Diana before they could bring themselves to do this.

23. Another thumbs up for both dresses, especially the one for the
church ceremony. The hat for the civil ceremony was o.k., especially for a British royal, but the feather spray is too high. Nonetheless, she looks much better than Mrs. Bush. Perhaps Pickles should get the phone number of the Duchess's designer.

The other day a reporter for The Sun (sleazy British tabloid) drove a van into Windsor Castle and drove around the place. In the van was a carboard box with the word "Bomb" written on it. Embarrassed police suddenly started visibly chcking everything that moved. Priceless.

27. About the wedding
Yeaterday morning, my husband was having breakfast at a diner close to his work. They had the wedding on TV. He told me about some of the comments such as "Nice blue dress." He couldn't watch it any more. I told him these kinds of comments sound like something said on Faux News. This diner always has Faux News on their corner TV. Here's wishing both Charles and Camilla all the best. It is too bad that Diana had to get screwed over by Charles.

But did they really have to mess up little Di before they could live happily ever after? They are both responsible for that divorce and putting Di through hell. I actually think Di at one time loved Charles. They used her to get an heir and a spare then kicked her to the curb.

39. Diana knew he was still in love with Camilla before she married him
and she had two affairs in the first six years they were married, when Charles wasn't even seeing Camilla.

There's more than enough blame to go around. Don't deify her because she's deceased. I doubt even she'd want that. She was human, too.

Hell, for all anyone knows, she could have beat Charles to the altar had she lived. Probably would have (Dodi?).

In the end, who cares? It's all water under the bridge, they're adults, they don't affect us politically, so what's it to us?

And I got married in my apartment by a JP. We drank $2.50 a bottle Andre champagne out of plastic cups. So what? It was still beautiful, to us.

This wedding WAS pretty damn modest compared to his first one, I should say.

People must enjoy being nasty about these two, or get off on it somehow. As for me, I don't get it. Who cares?
