Former Attorney General John Ashcroft to Join Regent University Faculty

JULY 1, 2005: Bush’s Former Attorney General and Cabinet Member to Shape Future Leaders in Law and Government at Leading Christian Graduate Program

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., March 18, 2005 — Former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft will serve Regent University in its new Center for Law and Justice beginning July 1, 2005, as a Distinguished Professor of Law and Government. In his new role, Ashcroft will teach law and government courses for the nation's premier Christian graduate school.

“Regent is a university known for excellence in providing an academically rigorous graduate education based on a biblical foundation,” said Ashcroft, who will teach his first Regent course this summer in Strasbourg, France, where the university sponsors a summer program on international human rights issues. “We so desperately need institutions across America that have a commitment to inspiring the next generation to focus on the principled and noble, rather than the pragmatic and doable. Regent University does just that.”

“John Ashcroft is a man of tremendous faith, character, and integrity,” said Dr. M.G. “Pat” Robertson, Regent University founder and chancellor. “He has just completed his term as the country's top law enforcement official, and we are delighted that he will devote some of his time to being a faculty member at Regent University.”

Dr. Barry T. Ryan, vice president of academic affairs for Regent University, concurred adding, “Regent's goal is to prepare its graduates to become leaders who will change the world. To do so, our students must be engaged with world-class leaders who have made some of the most important decisions of our time. John Ashcroft is one of those leaders.”

Ashcroft served as attorney general during President George W. Bush's first administration. As attorney general, he is credited with overseeing an historic era of safety and security in the United States following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He also led the Justice Department in taking criminals off the street, reducing gun crime, targeting illegal drugs, and protecting civil rights.

Ashcroft served two terms as Missouri's attorney general and was twice elected governor of the state. While serving as governor of Missouri, Ashcroft was chairman of the Education Commission of the States, an interstate compact created to improve public education by facilitating the exchange of information, ideas, and experiences among state policymakers and education leaders. In addition, Fortune magazine rated John Ashcroft one of the “Top Ten Education Governors.” He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1994 and earned a reputation on Capital Hill as a man of uncompromising principle.
