Cure for cancers 'in five years'
I know, I know, we've all heard this before, but wouldn't it be great...?

"Scientists in Manchester say a cure for all types of cancer could be available on the NHS within five years.

The world's first patient trials in a technique which genetically engineers cells will take place at the city's Christie Hospital later this year.

The treatment - gene-modified t-cell therapy - could replace more intrusive treatments like chemotherapy.

The cells are fitted with a "tracker" device to kill cancer cells before being injected back into the patient.

Professor Robert Hawkins, clinical director of Medical oncology at the hospital, says the initial results of lab tests have been "spectacular".

"In the lab we have seen spectacular results in lung tumours and in the brain. It's remarkable" - Professor Robert Hawkins

3. I agree. They're meant to sell newspapers.
I've been researching cancer treatments for almost 7 years, and the cure is not here, and won't be in five years. Not to say that significant progress isn't being made, but...cancer is not just one disease, it is really almost 200 in a simple sense, and multitudes more if you take into account individual genetic variations.

THERE IS NO MAGIC BULLET.

15. "Given as an injection, it could get rid of ...
a widespread range of tumours." This is the actual quote, and I do hope they're correct! :hi:

4. More profit in the treatments than in the cure....
Doesn't profit the insurance, healthcare & big pharma to CURE or PREVENT disease.

Seriously.

My oncologist had marble floors, chandeleliers, and separate rooms with tv's/vcr's in each.
I never saw poor people in there, only well insured ones.:(

and 5 years before that...and so on. They're just a bunch of idiots running their mouth for attention. Ignore these so call scientists. Real scientists don't call press conferences.

6. Not true. These things have been tried and they hopefully work in some
cancers, some of the time but it will definitely NOT cure all cancers. Cancers are very adaptable...like viruses

I'm willing to believe there are still some good things happening in the world. Even if Bush is in charge and making a mess of things everywhere he can - he can't stop progress entirely!!

13. there's wishful thinking
we will probably never really beat cancer. in order to become truly at good at at treating and/or preventing cancer we will have to unravel some of the most basic, and best hidden secrets of life itself.

17. I am watching another one, from Temple university
ON01910 is in phase 1 studies now, but if it is as effective and non-toxic as it appears I'm sure it will be fast tracked.
It could be evident because the people in this study all have advanced cancer. If it helps them...

http://www.wcn.org/interior.cfm?featureid=7&id=524452

<snip>
The Temple team tested ON01910 on 94 different human cancers.

"We found that ON01910 was a potent inhibitor of human tumor growth and also worked well with several existing cancer drugs, often inducing complete regression of tumors. Someday it might work either as a single drug or in combination with other drugs," research leader Prem Reddy, a professor of biochemistry and director of the Fels Institute for Cancer Research at Temple, said in a prepared statement.

"Our drug stops tumor cells from reaching normal cells three ways. First, it blocks invasion, next it blocks angiogenesis and finally, it induces tumor cell death," Reddy said.

18. I have seen evidence in the last few months of some amazing
research.

My tendency is toward cynicism, but I'm going to stay hopeful.

Medical advances are about the only thing I feel hopeful about.

anyway, so it's probably a moot point. I guess, in a way, wiping out the planet would stop cancer.

24. I'm cynical and hopeful at the same time
I survived a cancer scare last year, surgery and radiation took care of it, but I am still feeling the effects and will for the rest of my life. No matter how benign a form of cancer may be, I had thyroid cancer, its effects are lingering. I hope that something may come of this and all research. Cancer is horrible.

25. Costly Biotechs Will be Out of Reach
for all people except those with those with generous employer based coverages and that number continues to shrink. Some of the current biotech treatments cost more than $8000 per dose. Even planss that have 80% coverage will still result in significant out of pocket expenses for patients.
