CNN- Is it an impeachable offense?
They are comparing Bush's lie with Clinton and actually asking if a lie about war, where people DIE, is worse! The anchor has a British accent and the repub accused him of spinning.

I'm floored. They bandied about the word "impeach".

Too much. I'm stunned. :bounce:

1. Yes. Lying in the State of the Union
violates the President's constitutional obligation to give the American people the facts about their situation.

10. The SoTU is directed at the Congress...
...specifically. That doesn't make your statement less true, though, since the Congress is supposed to be there representing the rest of us. Anyway, if Clinton had put deliberate falsehoods in his SoTU address, Newt's boys would have been all over him, something about violating a specific provision in the Constitution and all.

I say it is equivalent to perjury, but that's just me.

WoW! That happened much quicker than I expected. I really thought Impeach would take months to hear from my TV.

3. Australian, I think.
In any case, he's not simply regurgitating the WH talking points, which is refreshing.

4. Australian. thanks
As I think of it, you're right.

The repub tried to drag Clinton into the discussion too deeply, but it ended up not really being about that. It is EASY to re-direct the conversation when that happens: Yes but no one's life was at stake. Or: Yes, but if that's ivestigated, shouldn't this be?

5. This may be a sticky point...
but the whole process against Clinton was, "the lies", then, "the lies under oath". OK, everyone agrees that bush lied, let's put him under oath, and then go for the gold.

These are the same people that lowered the bar in the first place, now they want to have it raised again. It won't fly. Even with Tenet falling on his sword, bush is toast. There is no way the press is getting off of this one. The free ride is over.

So, here we go; the ride will be bumpy, but the path is cut, and our sleeping Fourth Estate is finally rising to the occasion. Each tragic casualty in Iraq, brings one more piece of the wall down. Repugs are asking questions, hard questions, and this in itself is amazing, the sand is blowing away from base, and the admin is goping to fall. Rummy will be the next to go, then Rice.

7. Lower bar for impeachment now
Well, the Republicans lowered the bar for impeachment, didn't they... So they'll have no one to blame but themselves... Now you can say "impeachment" in polite company w/o being banded a raving loony.

Only prob: Republicans control all the committees.

8. It's lying under "the oath of office" of the POTUS, isn't it?
Certainly conducting a war is one of the duties of the POTUS and if the justification was a lie, then the oath of office was violated. What's to question?

9. YES!!
Keep it goin, baby!!

Damn right its impeachable. The requirement of the SOTU is laid out in the Constitution, so lying in commission of it MUST be considered high crimes and misdeameanors. How ELSE could it be interpreted?

Clinton lied in public and to the grand jury...that's ONE thing. He didn't decieve the American public into fighting a war where 200 Americans have died, and 10,000 Iraqi civilians died, and hundreds of billions of dollars have been hoodwinked from the American people in the commission of these war crimes.

GEORGE BUSH IS A CRIMINAL! PUT HIM IN JAIL!
