5. Hm
So if you win, you get a dollar, and if I win I get a hundred?

Done. The bet is one dollar.

Now I must stare intently at Senator Chafee of Rhode Island and put the whammy on him.

10. Well
That's the shits about being in the minority. I think every Dem on the committee will stand against Bolton (maybe not Feingold; he has this weird twitch about approving every Bush pick as a matter of courtesy), but it won't matter unless Chafee does it.

So yeah, Matt, one Senator does matter. Remember Mr. Jeffords.

8. Yes
Chafee's logic is that the two analyists that were targeted by Bolton, did not lose their jobs, after all, :eyes: so that makes everything just fine and dandy and above board as far as Bolton goes.

19. I have heard this statement about five times now and I still don't get it
Bolton didn't waste these guys, so he gets Chafee's vote?? Chafee will be targeted, but these guys didn't lose their jobs, so Chafee will vote for Bolton?? I don't get the logic at all. Is he afraid of being targeted or not afraid of being targeted?

9. Does it even matter anymore?
Whoever Bush picks will be even worse than the previous one. He does it for spite.

7. You're surprised?
We, the people, are no longer in charge of our government. Over and over again they prove this fact to us and yet the pollyannas among us think that the next time it will be different.

Wake up and smell the jackboot polish.

12. You're just now realizing this?
That's what being the minority party MEANS. It means that even if every single one of your members votes in total party solidarity all the time, the Republicans will usually get what they want anyway.

The people in Congress with the most power right now? Moderate, persuadable Republicans (or at least 'Pubs perceived that way).

It's not news. We've known this since we lost Congress in '02. That's why protecting the filibuster and the '06 elections are so important. Why the breast-beating over it now?

13. Bolton would be the most honest UN rep we've had in years.
Edited on Tue Apr-12-05 06:01 PM by Stirk
Seriously- c'mon. He's a UN-hating nut, to be sure- but all the loony, nationalist, irresponsible bullshit he's said in the past reflects the stance our government has had toward the UN for years. Just like the blatantly corporate Bush/Cheney presidency has been the same old corporate-run government we always have, without the happy, populist paint job.

People in this country like the UN, and they like multilateralism. As much as I'd prefer to see Bolton shown the door, part of me says fuck it- let these guys open the hood and let everyone can see the machine. They won't like it.

14. I think you're right. And the confirmation of John Negroponte will be the
final proof that this country is being led by a bunch of morally bankrupt bastards. Anyone who votes for that man deserves a special place in the bowels of hell. Just like the rest of the horrific administration, he smells of cruelty, death, and destruction.

16. They've already confirmed him twice before
Once for the UN, and just last year for Iraq after the "handover" of power. And he's being replaced in Iraq with Zalmay Khalilzad, who is another of the many from the same group that has control.

17. I think you're right...
And I am so depressed...last night (my time) I was enraged - hurling stuff and cursing at the television after Lugar gave his brilliant summing up about how we didn't need to be so concerned about Bolton's credibility, because he'd, you know, be speaking for Bush and Condi at the UN.

Today I just feel like crap .... I am so damn tired of this - outrage on top of outrage, each worse and more blatant than the one before. Someone tell me it has to stop sometime ....

:argh: :nuke: :grr:

20. I think a Bolton confirmation is iffy at best!
His nomination might get out of committee, but I'm not sure he'll be ablee to get 60 votes.

There's the other side too, when the Pubs know they can't get the 60 votes to donfirm, they won't let it out of committee because then they can blame it on the Dems in the committee.

We'll see.

I watched both yesterday with the questioniniong of Bolton, and today with the testemony of Ford. Everyone on that committee knows both were aired, and it's really tough to OK Bolton after Fords statements.
