A laundry list of slimey companies! I'm even more glad I cancelled my subscription last month after seeing that.

At any rate, XM is in the conservatives' pockets.

GE - Defense contractor
Wal Mart - RW piece of shit company
Halliburton - No comment necessary
Time Warner - AOhelL
Disney - RW company that wouldn't distribute F9/11 for political reasons.
Clear Channel - No comment necessary

This AAR deal stinks to high heaven. XM becomes AAR's exclusive network.. Doesn't air the entire lineup. As time goes on they cut more shows and add their own "Liberal" folks.. Maybe they can give Zell Miller and Joe Lieberman a show!

As soon as the deal was announced, and I heard about here at DU, I turned to my husband and said, "This deal stinks to High Heaven!"

And, I've been checking into where the Wal-Mart heirs' dollars go to - it isn't good. They appear to be Fundie wingnuts.

5. I did already check out the Sirius CEO awhile back.
Mel K. His dollars went to the Democrats. The Chairman of the Board sent some to the Rethuglicans; but Mel K's dollars went to the Democrats. When I get a chance, I'll explore more.

12. Sirius major shareholder at the moment is
Oppenheimer Funds - it's current rating is Hold - so no ones buying it - imo it's overvalued - and that's at 5 bucks a shares.

Give them time to get it together, and they'll prolly have the very same stockholders on their list....

these holdings oftentimes translate into pension funds, and 401k holdings, and annuities and such.

4. Xultar - you and I were right.
I was the one who stated that I was staying with Sirius. And that I wanted to see how they reacted to the whole thing. Sirius has served me well for over a year, and they are going to continue serving me well. AND how the whole situation this past few days stunk!

I'm still going to stay with Sirius. Howard Stern is anti-Boooosh. The CEO Sirius hired contributed to the Democrats, not the Rethuglicans.

And I was very suspicious, despite others saying that CC had sold out, that those sympathetic to Clear Channel hadn't been on the Board, and weren't still on the Board. Let me do some investigation of the XM Board. I wonder which candidates they donated funds to, and which PACs and 527s, in 2004.

VERY INTERESTING data you have there.

58. How is it false?
Are you saying that Wal-Mart does not own shares in XM? You see, the percentage of ownership doesn't necessary matter - because institutional investors generally aren't active in putting people on the Board. If it is true that both Wal-Mart and General Electric own millions of shares, then they would be the ones interested in putting people on the Board.

That's what I care about, and am researching. Who is on the Board of Directors of the respective companies, and where did their donations go around the time of the presidential campaign.

I'll post the data on DU when I get it.

I'm not into "demonizing XM." But I'm suspicious of this deal, and its long-term implications. It's a personal decision, but I'm sticking with Sirius for at a year or so.

8. XM is unfair and unbalanced. Sirius seems much better.
Edited on Wed Apr-13-05 03:03 PM by IanDB1
I was thinking about getting satellite radio myself, so now I am leaning toward Sirius as opposed to XM.

Basis for comparison:

Sirius has the following moderate / centrist content:
106 | NPR NOW
107 | NPR TALK
108 | PRI PUBLIC RADIO INTERNATIONAL
140 | ABC NEWS & TALK

Sirius has the following right-wing whack-job content:
141 | SIRIUS PATRIOT CONSERVATIVE VALUES
142 | SIRIUS RIGHT CONSERVATIVE TALK

Sirius has the following progressive / liberal content:
143 | SIRIUS LEFT
144 | AIR AMERICA RADIO ON SIRIUS
149 | SIRIUS OUTQ AMERICA'S GLBT RADIO STATION

Call him and ask him how he likes working for Nightwatch and The Ministry of Peace in real life!

On the other hand, XM Radio has ultra-extremist-far-right-fundies like Focus on the Family:
http://www.xmradio.com/programming/channel_page.jsp?ch=170

And other hate-mongering bigots like "Doctor" Laura:
http://www.xmradio.com/programming/channel_page.jsp?ch=165

XM also carries a full menu of Fox "News."

And while XM does carry some Air America content on its America Left channel, it does not have the entire Air America line-up.

Sirius carries both Air America and Sirius Left.

So, unless anyone has a good argument otherwise, I think I will prefer Sirius.

15. Halliburton and Walmart have "Axis of Evil" Multipliers

$1 Million Halliburton Dollars are the "Evil Equivalent" of $100 Million dollars from any other evil corporation.

$1 Million Walmart Dollars are the "Evil Equivalent" of $50 Million dollars from any other evil corporation.

And a $1 Thousand donation to Rick Santorum, Jesse Helms, Tom DeLay or Marilyn Musgrave is the "Evil Equivalent" of $100 thousand donated to any other Republican. Multiply the "Evil-Adjusted Value" by 10 for each of those those four "Most Evil" Republicans that donations are made to.

20. Basically
soemone apparently made up a list of Evil Corporations who are major stockholders in XM. This would mean that the Evil Corproations were in control of XM, and it was all wicked RightWing plot to cripple Liberal Radio, since XM has partnered with AAR.

but from the stockholder's lists - clearly the evil companies listed int he OP are not major stockholders of either company.

Many Mutual Fund companies are.

32. In Order...
1 - so what. you can block the channel out you don't want to listen to. Sirus carries their share of reich-wing nutcases so what's the diff?

2 - XM is in business. AAR is in business. Nothing OFFICAL announced (and that's what is making me nuts.. this info is 48 hours old) but I would bet dollars to donughts that XM will have the FULL AAR schedule, as well as a second 'left' channel by June 1. I would also bet that they will have a very low cost (maybe even free) equipment offer for people that want to move over. They are in business, NOT STUPID.

3 - Hey! I like Art! He's the reason I got XM in the first place :D

54. There are only two satellite radio providers
Only one of those companies carries Dobson and Schlesinger.

That means if we can get that one company to dump them, then Dobson and Schlesinger will be carried by zero satellite radio companies.

That also means we're 50% of the way to achieving the goal of eliminating Dobson and Schlesinger from Satellite Radio.

As for Art Bell, if he were to be kicked off Satellite Radio he would only broadcast telepathically through advanced alien technology anyway, so it would be an exercise in futility.

44. Well to echo Rosco....
1. My Cable lineup consists of lots of TV i would never watch - to me satellite radio is the same deal - bandwidth with lots of variety, just like AM/FM/Cable/Satellite TV - nothing i can do about that, nor would i want to.

2. Don't know, but I don't see why not. The way I look at it - Air America is in Pole Position here - they've already got coverage, and want more - and XM wants them because they're getting more and more popular. I just don't see why Air America would make a deal for more coverage of less material. I'm sure the full lineup will wind up playing.

3. Yes. (caveat - i have never listened to Art Bell and frnakly i thought he was dead, but i heard his show was a blast)

18. What's going on here? You seem to have good info
...but there are others that are wanting to bash XM - what's the deal?

BTW - is AAR not going to be free - IE broadcast & internet after this??

be affected. The only difference is that it will be on satellite on XM, and not Sirius.

37. One thing is clear.. XM and Sirius prefer that nobody stream AAR
for free. It's giving away their "exclusive" content for free.

I don't think AAR would dump a good percentage of their hard-core satellite audience to pay for bandwidth for streaming. Something else is going on that we don't know about yet.

It's not that they're trying to stop streaming, just that they would rather have people buy their service.

21. Good Info comes from RESEARCH...
and people are not taking the time to step back and SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

Exclusive contracts happen all the time, it's a way of business. OK if you bought Sirius eq, then you got a problem now. At least the receivers still can be used for SOMETHING. If you want to switch, they are SELLABLE.

I will be very suprised if XM dosen't get a second 'left' channel to push Schultz and Colmes over to and run the full AAR schedule by June 1.

XM and AAR are businesses, but THEY ARE NOT STUPID.

35. I am skeptical
I'm thinking the main reason they bought AAR was to GUT it, using the excuse that a softer approach is more marketable.

I think that is pathetic given the number of satellite radio channels available, and how lukewarm they all are, that there isn't room for one real Leftish channel.

But that is what "they" did to cable tv. 500 channels all about as original, various and interesting as oatmeal. Nice mellow stuff to sell cars and coffepots with.

Sad. I was hoping for something Real from satellite radio. When I discovered I was paying a monthly fee for minimal content and mucho commercials, I got the picture. It's exactly what they did with cable TV. Claim it was a commercial free, original and unique selection, get everyone hooked, and then BAM commercials and crap and all in a nice monopoly with no other choice.

They will fake it as a "success" and write it off. Like they feel perfectly justified to write off 49% of the country as likely consumers, just because their buddies are on the other side. It's NOT a business decision, because it's obvious there is more money to be made by opening up the market than by narrowing it. It's political, period.

56. Here's more from Sirius Backstage:
Recent posting re what happens with AA and Sirius (it's awful if true):

" From the AllAccess website today:

Quote:

With the previously announced deal that makes XM SATELLITE RADIO the "official satellite radio network" of AIR AMERICA RADIO, the liberal talk network will end carriage on rival SIRIUS SATELLITE RADIO as of JUNE 11.

SIRIUS has its own "SIRIUS LEFT" channel that carries original shows by veteran hosts ALEX BENNETT, LYNN SAMUELS, and THE YOUNG TURKS as well as JONES/DEMOCRACY RADIO's ED SCHULTZ and STEPHANIE MILLER, FOX NEWS RADIO's ALAN COLMES, and syndicated THOM HARTMANN and DOUG STEPHAN. SIRIUS had, unlike XM, been carrying AIR AMERICA on a dedicated channel without sharing; XM inserts SCHULTZ and COLMES into the AIR AMERICA feed and will continue to do so under the new deal. that SUCKS! (my insertion here)

Meanwhile, RACHEL MADDOW, whose "UNFILTERED" show was displaced by the addition of JERRY SPRINGER to the network's lineup, launches her new 5-6a ET show THURSDAY (4/14) on AAR."

My conclusion: no one really know yet what's going on with this.

57. Exactly.. the only thing we know for sure...
1. XM Will be running Air America
2. They are adding Rachel's show to the existing lineup.
3. Schultz and Colmes are still under contract.
4. They would be crazy to drop Schultz
5. They will be crazy not to run ALL of AAR
6. Contracts take time to work out for a new channel to move Schultz and Colmes to, and add new talent.

In other words.

DON'T PANIC. We're only 48 hours in to this deal.

oh yeah,

7. Take what you read at Sirius with a grain of salt, they want to bias their view.

60. Seems like there are two kinds of posters on this thread:
Those who rabidly defend XM ("LIES LIES LIES"). Gotta wonder if they're not already XM subscribers who now want to feel vindicated.

Those who rabidly attack XM ...

Oh, there is a third category: those of us who are considering subscribing, and trying to decide on one of the two.

As for me, the decision won't be based on which one carries AAR. It'll be based on the overall programming. Somebody mentioned NFL programming and favored Sirius. For me, XM has ONE rather lame bluegrass channel. Sirius has two kickass bluegrass channels. That pretty much does it for me. The other music channels I like tend to favor Sirius as well.

Plus I'm not crazy about the XM/Clear Channel connection. My biggest fear is that I'll buy Sirius, and the two will merge and become just another typical Clear Channel outlet. Bash me if you wish (LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES!). Or bite me.

62. Well, since you quote me
with the "LIES LIES" line, I will admit to it: I don't subscribe to Sirius or XM radio. Luckily, in LA we have AAR (and Pacifica and some good hip hop stations) so I don't feel the need for satellite radio. However, if one actually looks at the stuff Roscoe posted above--the stuff from the NYSE and not from the Sirius boards--it's pretty clear what is truth and what is fiction. It's pretty sad to me.

64. Yes I'm an XM Subscriber...
I dislike Clear Channels ruination of radio as much as anyone. That's the main reason I bought satellite radio. I've had my XM for almost 2 years, even before AAR came online even though I was ecstatic when they debuted on XM Radio (and ONLY on XM Radio) last March. I was listening that day while I was driving on the NYState Thruway and would have missed AAR's debut without XM.

Back to the point, in my two years of listening to XM, I've been extremely happy with my choice of XM. You are right it should come down to who's programming suits you best. XM's programming suits me fine. I also like the XM Radio equipment. I prefer my Roadie2 to the Sirius equipment I've seen due to it's small size and portability. I can take it from my car to a company vehicle in minutes. I've never seen any hint of any Clear Channel censorship or heavy handed programming on XM either.

As was stated in a thread 2 days ago, this whole argument should be about furthering Air America Radio for the good of the Progressive Movement. The venom I've read directed towards Clear Channel should be rechanneled into emails and phone calls to XM, Sirius and AAR to convince them to carry AAR in its entirety on BOTH systems. The conspiracy theories and hatred directed towards XM don't further the big picture.

Yes I'm an XM subscriber and I'm happy that I made the choice but I'm not trying to gloat because of the XM/AAR deal.
