The last time was a few years ago, while travelling with my Dad. I'm sorry to say, I never travel with my Dad anymore. I can rarely even VISIT with him, because hate-radio has made him hostile and anti-social.

Edited on Fri Apr-15-05 02:31 AM by eagler
I just wrote a thesis on talk radio. They are by far the most powerful of all the media in political doublespeak. Even though there is some liberal talk radio the right wing controls 95% of the airwaves and they are in the process of taking over TV broadcasting. Brian Williams who replaced Brokaw was a guest on Rush's radio show in February and Bob Schiefer was on with Hannity the same week.Of course he replaced Rather. So the takeover is progressing. WE NEED A NEW FAIRNESS DOCTRINE! We might not be in this mess if we still had the old one.

They broadcast Ed Schultz from 4 to 7.

Otherwise, I'll buzz into Rush and O'Reilly on occasion, plus the local idiot. Only bits at a time though lest my head explode.

Ed has saved my sanity, I must say.

9. You're in Chicago aren 't you? I used to listen to WLS but quit
Edited on Fri Apr-15-05 02:48 AM by ariellyn
two years ago. It became masochistic. I used to listen to Rush too. I thought I was keeping tabs on "them". But, again, it is really just masochistic. They will spew hatred and filth over the airwaves and their gullible listeners will buy it and there's nothing we can do about it--except turn it off. WLS, in particular, reeks.

Is that hag, Terry whats-her-name still on 'LS? She was the most disgusting of all. Roe Conn is another scumbag.

Yea, terri "i am a snot and PROUD of it" O'Brien is still there, Roe was okay before his partner left, cant remember the guys name??

I find the worst host to be Don and Roma, Roma is supposed to be "moderate" but her husband puts an end to her speaking if she bounces to far left.

Nate Clay is the only person on the left they have, Eileen byrne had Jay Marvin until they fired him last December:

34. Another Chicago Alternative
From one who grew up with "The Big 89" from 60's...and then was a regular listener when they had folks like Jay Marvin (before Columbine & he was muffled by management...his early shows when he called wingnuts "Brainstems" were great to hear. Then they brought in Mike Malloy for several years.

BTW...Conn's partner was Garry Meier...former Steve Dahl's partner, and he added some fun, along with Jim Johnson and Ron Magers, on that afternoon show. Now that's gone.

I listened to Eileen Byrne just once, cause a friend told me how awful she was, and I wasn't disappointed. That lady is in serious need of reality. The rest of the station is a waste of electrons...even in their best days. Now it's all right wing crap, and even Nate Clay sounds muted.

WIND is owned by Salem...right wing fundies who are spending a ton of money on their new station...and from what I've seen, throwing a lot of it away as the ratings have been horendous. But for those who need venom...this is pure bile...just directly hook up, disconnect brain and just nod.

Several options...first are the many good educational and college stations. WLUW at Loyola University, WNUR from Northwestern and WZRD from Northeastern offer a lot of great alternative news programming...including a lot of the Pacifica programs. There's also NPR on WBEZ...91.5 (not as good as they used to be, but the best International coverage on the dial...plus this was my late mother's favorite station), WILL (580) from the University of Illinois, Wisconsin Public Radio (90.7) and Northern Illinois Public Radio (from NIU) at 89.5. Needless to say I pack lots of music along when I drive these days.

At home, I have the Linksys Internet Radio and am able to tune to all Pacifica stations, KGO in San Fran (Bernie Ward fix) and a bunch of International stations...and far cheaper than a satellite.

Too bad Air America and Fred Eychanner can't get their acts together to get a station on in Chicago...and at night I'll pop on 1530 from Cincinatti...but even with AAR, there still isn't much local Progressive radio, and I don't see any happening in Chicago in the near future.

10. Right wing radio made me a liberal!
I am not joking. I started listening to talk radio in the late 80's when there was a mix of viewpoints. I've been hooked on it ever since. In recent years, listening to hardcore conservatives has made me want to oppose them. The straw that broke the camel's back for me was on the day of the Supreme Court ruling on Lawrence v. Texas (sodomy laws). I couldn't believe how the right wing reacted to that. They were OUTRAGED that consenting adults wouldn't be arrested for certain types of sex! They railed against the right to privacy! I could not believe what I was hearing. That solidified by anti-right-wing views for good!

When Bill O'Reilly complains about the ACLU, I feel more satisfied about being a member. When Sean Hannity gets hysterical and emotional about what Democrats in Congress are doing, it makes me happy because that means the Democrats are doing something good!

11. hehe yes
It's pretty funny to listen to what some people consider news. Given the hours that I listen to AM radio, I never hear the big five above, only the wannabe locals.

I was listening to Glenn Beck on KLIF in Dallas, and this was around 1.5 weeks ago when the attack on Abu Gharib was in the news...

The host mentions an attack on Abu Gharib with a few dozen casualties, and then says almost verbatim, "Well that's all I have to say about that. About Terry Shaivo..."

If we had anything approaching equal time/fairness doctrine, they wouldn't have a chance.

Your right the shaivo fiasco dominated right nut radio, it is simply all they talked about, in the last three days not a single host has mentioned her.

19. No, but I was exposed to this toxin over a period of several days
at work many, many years ago by a rabid Rush fan. The first few times I heard the show, I honestly thought it was satire... silly me. I really didn't believe anyone in our galaxy could possibly be that blatantly ignorant. Then I came to the realization that it was not satire... and yes, someone could be that ignorant... and it seems that there came to be many, many more... and they and their minions eventually installed the current WH Resident.

The whole thing still sounds like a satire, though... or a horrible Nightmare on Elm Street. If only I could wake up to hear President Kerry's press conference in the morning!

Outside of those several days, my ears have not been violated by that particular type of radio garbage.

22. I listen to Rush sometimes
Not all the time but sometimes just to see what the neo-thug talking points are.

This week is exception though. I was listening to every Rush show that I could because Rush was having a meltdown. On the air! It was too funny, especially when he said "blow job". I couldn't believe he said that. Also Rush was attacking the elected Republican officials for not standing up for "what they believe in". Earth to Rush, those Republicans don't believe in any thing except lining their own pockets and the pockets of their contributers. Maybe Rush is starting to catch on.

36. Did the FCC Fine Him Yet?
He actually said "blow-job" on the radio??? What about the children?? I sent my complaint to the FCC. I just happened to have my young impressionable daughter in the car with me. I told the FCC that I was not too happy that Rush made me have to explain what a blow-job was to an 8 year old.

I urge all other DU'ers that also had their children in the car with them and heard this to clog up the FCC's e-mail and fax machines.

I thought he should have gotten the Howard Stern treatment when a while back he called a sex-change operation an "Ad-a-dick-to-me".

Of course, since Rush is the right wings enabler, I bet there is not even a peep from the FCC.

This prick needs to be taken down. It's personal for me. I am active duty military and this punks show is broadcast on Armed Forces Radio. I also watched my two brothers change to Republican ditto-heads after too much exposure to this ass pickle.

On a positive note, after much work and an "intervention" on my part, my two former Rush-bot brothers voted for Kerry and changed their registration from Repuke back to Dem. The economy, the war, the way the Republican Party is destroying Ohio made them change their minds.

Seriously, Rush needs to be crushed. Tell me again why he's not in jail.

The nice thing about Neuros it has a built in FM transmitter so you can listen to what you downloaded without ear phones on any radio. This is real nice while driving your car.
