Army Officer Trainee Prince Harry "lacks same skills as other recruits"
http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/04/15/prince.harry.computers/index.html

LONDON, England -- Britain's Prince Harry, who is scheduled to start his army officer training next month, has been told to brush up on his computer skills after reportedly failing a test at the elite Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. "Although the computer test was a lot more complex than just sending emails, instructors were amazed that Harry failed it," the Mirror quoted a military source as saying. "He seemed to lack the same skills as the other recruits."

"One of the tests is a computer diagnostic test to detect what they have to brush up on before coming to Sandhurst," he said. "Harry has not failed anything. It's not a case of pass or fail, it's just a diagnostic test."

The report on Harry's computer skills is just the latest incident in which the third in line to the British throne has found himself in the media spotlight.

Earlier this year, Harry was pictured on the front page of The Sun newspaper wearing a swastika on his sleeve at the party. He was also holding a drink and smoking a cigarette.

2. Why UK taxpayers support these useless dregs is beyond me.
Turn the palaces into public museums and make these dumbasses get jobs and lives.

5. It's beyond me too.
And I'm one of those taxpayers.

Fortunately, they do seem in a fairly terminal condition.

6. Agreed
I don't know how people can support the idea of royalty at all. It effectively says that a tiny percent of people is superior, solely due to whom they were born to. It's just my opinion, but I find the whole thing to be an antiquated idea that is way past its expiration date.

8. I don't put up with Bush.
I've done everything within my power to depose our little prince.

10. Well you'll still have
a leader, a head of the nation, no matter who it is.

And everytime it's a Republican, you won't like it.

Britain has had a royal family for over a thousand years. It's 'always been there' like the Tower and the Thames.

People don't question it, don't even think of it in fact.

The Catholic church has a Pope. People don't question that either, medieval or not.

All of these roles could be taken over by a committee, and the way they're installed, or changed could be done differently.

But people just don't think about it. It's just 'always been there'

They have more important things to do than reorganize the entire country everytime a leader does something dumb.

12. actually..
People don't question it, don't even think of it in fact.

It was questioned before Charles I was beheaded and the country became a commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell. Didn't last 25 years before Charles II was asked back and the monarchy restored.

They've been there, done that back in the 1600's.

13. Except they don't really have any power.
The royal family is a figurehead -- no real power at all. I feel sorry for them, sort of: constantly being dragged around in front of the public, doing stupid things like playing polo and waving from cars. It's sad!

I say give them each a castle and a chunk of change, let them keep their "titles," and let them go off on their own.

But I'm not British, so I guess if they want to keep up the tradition, it's none of my business.

14. You have your good and bad political leaders too.
Why be stuck with a family full of loafing slackers on taxpayer expense as well?

Tradition? Some traditions are best thrown on the scrap heap of history. Royalty is one of them.

15. heh, kinda the same way how skinner rules DU
and if you have a problem with it, too bad. The only place you can talk about it is the Ask the Administators forum, and even then other users can't participate in the discussion.

Yet the people here love it. Question it and you get flamed all to hell (watch them come). Same with the brits. The monarcy may be old fashioned and stupid, but you;d better not bad-mouth it.

4. "Royals just like normal people shock"
Just goes to show that, in terms of the most expensive education possible, you can take a royal to ETon, but you can't make him think.

Of course, his mind might just be addled from the cannabis, drink, and violence.

9. Meh, I think the British press is always trying to build a Henry V.
You know, the whole "juvenile delinquent prince" thing is good tabloid copy. Who really gives a shit? He's just a kid- he's going to fuck up.

But then I don't follow "royals" gossip at all.

11. Takes after his great great-uncle, David Windsor (Edward VIII)
Henry is a rudderless as his great-aunt Margaret was ... a spare with no purpose.

16. His great-aunt Margaret suffered a bit....
Her first love was Peter Townshend, ex RAF hero of the Battle of Britain. But he was divorced. To marry him, she would have had to relinquish ALL the perks of royalty. She wasn't strong enough.

So she made another marriage that lasted a while, and drank & smoked herself into an early grave. But she lived long enough to see that things were easier for the younger generation.
