A Reminder: The Lancet Found Iraqis 58 TIMES MORE LIKELY TO DIE Under Bush

than under Saddam.
==================================================================
I was just thinking about the now famous study that found 100,000 Iraqi civilians had died since the US invasion. I also remembered a stat that I found far more startling amid claims that the Iraqi people are far better off now than they were under Saddam.

The Lancet found this far from the truth. They found that Iraqi civilians are 58 times more likely to die a violent death now than they were under their brutal dictator.

Saddam couldn't begin to kill Iraqis at the rate being accomplished by George Bush!

Can anyone argue that these people are better off?

Immediate Withdrawal! Immediate Withdrawal! Immediate Withdrawal! Immediate Withdrawal! Immediate Withdrawal!

Iraq death toll 'soared post-war'
Iraqis are now 58 times more likely to die a violent death, Lancet

Poor planning, air strikes by coalition forces and a "climate of violence" have led to more than 100,000 extra deaths in Iraq, scientists claim.

A study published by the Lancet says the risk of death by violence for civilians in Iraq is now 58 times higher than before the US-led invasion.

Unofficial estimates of civilian deaths had varied from 10,000 to over 37,000.

2. War on Iraq Has Doubled Malnutrition Among Iraqi Children

UN Monitor: War on Iraq Has Doubled Malnutrition Among Iraqi Children

GENEVA -- The war in Iraq and its aftermath have almost doubled malnutrition rates among Iraqi children, a UN specialist on hunger has told the world's major human rights body.

Acute malnutrition rates among Iraqi children under five rose late last year to 7.7 per cent from four per cent after the ouster of President Saddam Hussein in April 2003, said Jean Ziegler, the UN Human Rights Commission's special expert on the right to food.

Malnutrition, which is exacerbated by a lack of clean water and inadequate sanitation, is a major child-killer in poor countries. Children who manage to survive are usually physically and mentally impaired for the rest of their lives and more vulnerable to disease.

Acute malnutrition signifies a child is actually wasting away

Let them eat bombs

The doubling of child malnutrition in Iraq is baffling

Terry Jones

A report to the UN human rights commission in Geneva has concluded that Iraqi children were actually better off under Saddam Hussein than they are now.

This, of course, comes as a bitter blow for all those of us who, like George Bush and Tony Blair, honestly believe that children thrive best when we drop bombs on them from a great height, destroy their cities and blow up hospitals, schools and power stations.

It now appears that, far from improving the quality of life for Iraqi youngsters, the US-led military assault on Iraq has inexplicably doubled the number of children under five suffering from malnutrition. Under Saddam, about 4% of children under five were going hungry, whereas by the end of last year almost 8% were suffering.

These results are even more disheartening for those of us in the Department of Making Things Better for Children in the Middle East By Military Force, since the previous attempts by Britain and America to improve the lot of Iraqi children also proved disappointing. For example, the policy of applying the most draconian sanctions in living memory totally failed to improve conditions. After they were imposed in 1990, the number of children under five who died increased by a factor of six. By 1995 something like half a million Iraqi children were dead as a result of our efforts to help them.

4. Americans Are Blind To Misery! It Sickens Me!
The American lifestyle somehow puts blinders on us that prevent us from looking away from our televisions long enough to see childern starving!

Did this country ever care? Have we lost our humanity or is our nation's history one long story of indifference to suffering?

for Iraqis to pay for enjoying the fruits of freedom, liberty, and democracy.

9. Talk about overkill
They are there to spread democracy and freedom. But it seems it's the ultimate freedom - the seperation of body and mind - which they are sowing

19. Yeah. Socked right in the gut. I think they stole it.
But, the up side is, they pretend they didn't so they also have to pretend that our wishes matter.

Whoopi Goldberg's junkie character, "Fontaine" has a great line: "M*therf#cker, I have BEEN in your pocketbook and I KNOW where you live."

We know where they live. :hi:

23. We should start a "return Saddam!" movement.
Edited on Sun Apr-17-05 11:45 PM by Peake
Think of the children!

How about Saddam as an independent candidate in the next election? His track record for feeding children trashes Bush's! How wonderfully embarassing that would be.

Someone start a Saddam versus Bush chart, I wonder how funny Bush would look next to the dictator. Both killed the people under their power ("Don't kill me!" mocked Bush).

I guess it implies unnecessesary deaths. Which begs the question what are the necessesary deaths...
