Poll question: Have you been Baptised? |
|
Edited on Tue Apr-19-05 08:33 PM by JanMichael
Just curious what the percentages are here on DU.
My parents did not do it to me as an infant and I've never had the desire to do it as an adult.
Not quite sure what the percentages are here in the U.S. of A.
Anyway...
PS~ Yes I'm a godless commie, but that shouldn't have diddly to do with your vote or circumstances:-)
PSS~ Only asking because the fact that I haven't been baptised was seen as nutty when I was back in Poland, even by the athiests that I knew.

In an attempt to get a certain church elder into bed, I became a <_________>
and had to be dunked...
Does that count?
and people, spare me the outrage..cause I don't care.

No problems here. I once made a kick-me sign for lent from purple construction paper, and kicked our pastor square in the ass after smoothly putting it on his back. I was ten. So don't worry about me judging you.

Believe me, it was entirely against my will.
I have nothing but scorn for the Catholic Church.

5. Yes, back in 1987 when I was 22 years old, of my own free choice |
|
(and yes, there is, indeed, such a thing!) Protestant baptism, I remain a Christian today. A lot of Protestant denominations don't believe in infant baptism, they believe it has to be a choice freely made as an adult. I would definitely agree with that.

It didn't really do me much good. I went to church for the first 12 years of my life, and came out an atheist. C'est la vie.

I don't go to church though. I feel sorry for the church officials who had to deal with me when I was younger. I gave them a lot of hell and showed them who is boss. My parents gave up forcing me to go to church. :P

17. Nope. My parents didn't have me baptized. |

I don't think that they made a decision about it. They were just lazy.
I haven't seen the need for it.

18. Other - When I was 15 and 16 I attended a Bible Baptist church and chose |
|
to be baptized. This was my personal experience with fundie thinking. I no longer attend any church, but am a very spiritual person, not exclusively a Christian.

19. My grandparents never got to me before they died... |
|
then I was in a church that did not do infant baptism. My parents left it up to me. But it took me until I was 51 to actually do it. Our church says that it is not by free choice - I was finally selected. It must have been.

23. i'm baptised and confirmed |
|
I think from your poll you might not know the difference.
A baptism in many Christian sects is done to an infant to protect her in case she dies before she has a chance to decide for herself. When she is 12 or 13 or so, she studies catechism and is then confirmed after accepting the tenets of the church. The baptism is a pure magical ceremony of sprinkling words and water over a baby who probably is sleeping or crying. While there is a certain amount of cheating with confirmation -- they give you the questions AND the answers so there is no doubt that you will pass -- you have a developed mind and are aware of what is happening.
It seems nutty to your friends that you weren't baptised as a baby because it isn't like you're asking the baby to believe anything. You're splashing holy water and getting a blessing said over the baby, basically just wishing it well in life and the afterlife. Even if you grow up to be atheist, where's the harm? Most parents in the 50s and 60s (at least in the U.S. south) would do it as a precaution. Why close doors for a baby? But we're a superstitious lot down here, I guess. There's a lot more acceptance of open atheists now but when I was a kid...you just wouldn't deprive your kid of the baptism. It Just Wasn't Done.
The conservation movement is a breeding ground of communists and other subversives. We intend to clean them out, even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country. --John Mitchell, US Attorney General 1969-72

26. I was born in 1968 in SE Missouri, the "Bootheel" section. |
|
Which was fairly fundamentalist from what I gather. Apparently my mother was not superstitious. "It just wasn't done?" well it was not done to me 37 years ago.
Or are you refering to a time before 1968?

24. Dunked by the Baptists, sprinkled by the Methodists, and confirmed |
|
by Episcopalians.
The Baptists scared the shit outta me at vacation bible school when I was 10 so I let them dunk me. At 16, I willingly joined the United Methodist Church of my mom's family, sprinkled with holy water from a red rose. At 18, I left the church but returned to the church 27 years later to be confirmed as an Episcopalian. Life's journeys are often curious and always revealing.

once as a baby, again as an adult (different religion). Figure all my bases would be covered. Now I don't believe in any of it.
