Question about religious non-diversity on CNN AM: 100% Catholic??? |
|
I was watching CNN this morning, when they ran this absolute non-story -- Bill Hemmer's Mom and Dad at the Vatican, witnessing the choosing of the new Pope.
I was surprised, because I never would have guessed Hemmer is a Catholic. Then it struck me: McCafferty was whining about how Catholics should not try to change the church from within, and with that Irish name and point of view, I assume he is Catholic.
Soledad O'Brien I believe also is Catholic (I think I went to school with her sister and their Mom is Cuban and Dad is Irish, and they were quite devout).
Whatshername Costello has an Italian or Hispanic last name and also is likely to be Catholic.
Is the CNN morning team 100% Catholic??? Does that explain why CNN made this death-of-Pope-new-Pope as big a story as a presidential election or the death of Princess Di?

7. She appears to have had a sh*tload of plastic surgery ... |
|
My SO mentioned it one morning. We were distractedly looking at the news, when she said, Costello has really pronounced cheekbones. The more we looked at her, the weirder she looked -- like she has these little plastic cones just under her skin. Creepy.

I have always considered the death of Princess Diana to have been one of the most overhyped and over covered stories in my 40+ years on this planet. As to the Pope's passing, A Pope doesn't die everyday, so the election is a rare event -- Even rarer than a scrub press conference. It's big news around the world, especially, since a sizeable portion of the world's population is Catholic. Hell...it makes news in China and Vietnam. It's important as a global news story.

6. Wouldn't it be nice if they'd do real straight-across comparison? |
|
If you're going to report about religion, it would be helpful to do some straight across comparison between major sects on whatever the specific issue at hand is.
I know that's expecting toooooooo much of the American people; afterall, they are *only* interested in cheating wives and other total BS (sarcasm).

8. Yes, it's a question of editorial choice and balance... |
|
I realize it's a big story, but one perceives it to be bigger the more Catholic one is. I doubt that the choice of the leader of the southern Baptists will get as much play, even though there are more baptists in the US than Catholics.

9. I love hearing about what is going on in other religions. |
|
Don't go to church myself, and I have to say that it seems religion has a bad effect on lots of people, but as a student of human behavior and mental processes my whole life, I really enjoy knowing w hat makes some/any-thing what it is, that includes the differences and similarities between various "christian" sects.
