How are there any gay or atheist Republicans today?? |
|
The appointment of a pope who actively opposes liberalism raises the legitimate question of how liberal Catholics view the tension in being that. (I really appreciate the liberal Catholics here who have voiced how they handle that conflict.)
It seems to me, though, that that is a minor conflict compared to any atheist or gay, today, who is Republican. The new GOP is intent on theocratic goals, and insistent on depriving gays of a host of rights that the rest of us enjoy, or even on recriminalizing homosexual behavior. This board isn't likely to generate an informed discussion of how gay or atheist Republicans reconcile those conflicts, just because there aren't many Republicans here. But given the angst some here have expressed that we would discuss the first conflict, I thought it worth pointing out that these kinds of conflicts are quite common in the political landscape.
