Did you ever in your wildest dreams believe that one day
You would wish our healthcare and education measured up to that of Cuba?
You wished our progressive attitude would measure up that of Spain or Canada?

Can anyone think of anything else that we never felt another country would trump the US on?

1. How about having a free press?
Now we've just got Bush's Pravda.

2. How about having free speech?
I live and work in a really red state. I have to constantly edit my speech or just keep quiet. I recently was "called on the carpet" for a private conversation I had at work -- that was overheard by someone who had the gall to complain about it! Assholes!

6. Not to be nosy...
But would you mind elaborating?

I'm sure I have some similar stories from up here in KS. :hide:

7. Sorry, this reply took so long -- I just checked back in here
I was asked by someone who knows me and my brothers how we all turned out so liberal, and think the same way politically, since we grew up in Oklahoma. Sort of like it's us against the rest of the state. I said something like "Well, our family is noted for its intellect." The person asking is also very liberal and then remarked on one of W's latest gaffes. (There have been so many, I can't remember what, exactly.) We discussed it for a minute and then went on to something else. About a week later, my supervisor said she had received a complaint. The person eavesdropping said I made her feel uncomfortable by implying that W's supporters are stupid. I was asked to cool it. I was annoyed to say the least. Especially since I wasn't talking to the person who complained.

9. So much for freedom of thought....
:wow:

Did you tell the supervisor that if this person is so offended that it might be best if they discontinued their eavesdropping activities?

(I'm sure you didn't--I wouldn't have thought of that until later, either. I'd be too pissed. :grr:)

I don't know what I find more shocking; the fact that someone not even involved in the conversation believes they have censorship privileges on the content, or that a "supervisor" would even bring up such a petty grievance instead of dressing down the complainer for being an ass.

Egad.

10. Honestly, I wanted to just walk away. Find another place to work.
I was, and still am, greatly offended by the event.

12. It is the same almost everywhere, moving or quiting your job
won't help.

I can relate to your feelings, from my own experience.

3. Scandanavians having the highest standard of living in the world
according to what I've heard. They're not 100% socialist but their mixed economies work well for them. Why don't we take the best from them...and copy it ?

8. We could, but we let the Midas rich gluttoniraty (not a word)
convince us it would be bad for everyone to do well. After all lazy people don't deserve nice things. You have to work hard at three jobs to get ahead and stop whining about health care and other benefits. If you can't afford them, then you didn't plan your life well enough to deserve those things. They know they would have to give up some to even up the playing field so they lie to keep their fortunes and we stay behind struggling to keep up.

4. No one has, or ever will beat us on
ridiculous military budgets, defense spending, counterintelligence budgets, missile defense spending, chemical and biological warfare research and development, psyops, covert ops, and generally spending your dollars on devising ways to overthrow governments who don't kiss Amurka's corporate ass. Other than that, many countries beat us in many areas that are worth dumping money into.

14. Maybe they will someday find the missing $2.3 trillion DoD money
Edited on Sun Apr-24-05 07:43 PM by EVDebs
War on Waste CBS News
www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/01/29/eveningnews/main325985.shtml

"According to some estimates we cannot track $2.3 trillion in transactions," Rumsfeld admitted.

$2.3 trillion — that's $8,000 for every man, woman and child in America. To understand how the Pentagon can lose track of trillions, consider the case of one military accountant who tried to find out what happened to a mere $300 million.

"We know it's gone. But we don't know what they spent it on," said Jim Minnery, Defense Finance and Accounting Service."

No wastrel child left behind at DoD, I'll tell you that much !

16. This nation is ill in more than one way.... this is
just incredible.... surreal to the core.... and they lock people up for being a little off on their taxes.... if this is the case the entire Pentagon should be put away for life.

need to rely on the Russians for safe and dependable space vehicles for our space program.

13. Unbelievable
I never thought we would slide so far backwards in such a short time. We as a nation are in big trouble. I would even say a major crisis.

17. I never thought
That I would look to Spain and Italy for better gay rights, to England for a freer press, or to Canada for a better job market. Soon Canada will have more stable money too.
