US News: "...Howard Dean is no Terry McAuliffe"
Let's just state the obvious: New Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean is no Terry McAuliffe . Where the flashy former Clinton fundraiser was a gregarious ringmaster accustomed to the bling-bling of the highest non-publicly elected Democratic job around, Dean is almost a seminarian in his approach to the post. And, oddly, his style seems to fit with the party's bid to build its blue-collar base--just as McAuliffe's meshed with the DNC's need to raise gobs of money and go high tech.

What's so different? McAuliffe would limo around town, dropping in at the Palm to huddle with Washington big shots. The 2004 presidential hopeful, by contrast, takes the bus or subway, buying his own $1.35 ticket. Sometimes he bums rides from staffers or walks the four blocks to the Capitol for meetings. "Please Call Me Howard" never flies first class and always carries his own bags.

Other signs of the ex-guv's modest style: He eats at his desk, stays in a cheap D.C. hotel, and likes oxford shirts and penny loafers. Affectionately dubbed a "geek" by pals, he's often glued to his cellphone and loves E-mail. "His expertise is grass roots and his lifestyle is no different," says an associate. So far, Washington likes what it sees, surprised he's not the oddball that newsies pegged him as last year. Says an aide, smiling: "They're giving him a shot."

21. I think they were mocking McCaullife
McCaullife was so smarmy...I like Dean's sincerity. He's direct, which is a nice change. I also like his sense of fiscal responsibility. I've been critical of him in the past, but so far I like the job he's doing.

8. Anyone else totally stoked that Howard Dean is DNC Chairman?
I am so sick of power mad egocentric politicians that use our money to provide themselves with a sickeningly extravagant, disgustingly wasteful environmentally destructive luxurious lifestyle.

A salute to Howard Dean for his common sense and consideration.

Dean is the perfect man for the job at this point in party history! He working to make us a 50 state party at the grass roots and he's VERY good at what he does.

17. Dean is growing on me
I did not support him in the primaries and was worried about him as DNC chair. However, I have been please so far and this last story really confirms my feelings.

25. Sigh.
Us Deaniacs could've told you. He's no different now than he was then. He'll be no different a decade hence than he is now. He is true blue through and through. Honest as the day is long. Competence, visionary, committed and passionate. He says what he means and will DO what he says -- is someone who is uniquely capable of dreaming big AND implementing those dreams, even if it has to be little by little, step by step.

It's always so disappointing (okay, heartbreaking) to me when I encounter people say what you have said here, who apparentlty didn't make the opportunity to actually know more about him back then. There's nothing new or different about him and he'd have been an absolutely FABULOUS nominee.

But, at least you're getting to know him now.

23. The "party of the people" should expect no less
but it would be nice if all politicians were like this. If you take away the lifestyle, then you take away the inherent corruption too. Man, Howard Dean really is the greatest thing that happened to the "pansycrat" party in a long time.

I wish he would challenge Ken Mehlman to do the same.

24. "the oddball that the NEWSIES pegged him last year." EXACTLY!!!!!
He never was what the press made him into, yet most people in this country will never know that, unless the press decides to come clean. Something I never expect them to do because it would mean admitting they were wrong or lying throughout 2003-4. And....btw... Kerry is "aloof" don't ya know?
