A Bumper Sticker I Didn't Understand...
Edited on Mon Apr-25-05 10:06 AM by arwalden
Over the weekend, I spotted a home-made sticker on a car in the Safeway parking lot.

Someone had (not so skillfully) cut a "God Bless America" bumper sticker into its three separate words. Then reassembled the sticker to say "America Bless God".

What were they trying to say? Were they mocking the ubiquitous "God Bless America" stickers? Were they mocking religion? Or were they just being silly? Or trying to get people to become religious?

The car had no other stickers that would give me a clue as to their reason, motivation or their intended meaning.

Weird.

1. I think they were telling people to be more Christian
Just my interpretation of it, anyway. I've heard people say things very similar to the message of the sticker you saw.

2. I think they were mocking 'God Bless America' stickers..I've oftern
wondered why if we're such a Christian country, we were asking for God's blessing instead of devoting ourselves to him.

4. I take it as meaning that they believe our country is a mess and we need
help from higher powers.

5. No - they were trying to say that Americans should do things to
honor God and not just expect God to bless them because they "deserve" it.

6. It reminds me of a quote - was it Lincoln?
"Do you pray for God to be on our side, Mr. President"

"No, I pray for us to be on God's side."

Something like that.

7. I suspect they're hoping people will honor God
Rather than automatically assuming that God will honor America regardless of whatever chicanery, butchery, hypocrisy, and out-and-out deviltry we're perpetrating.

When Jesus said to love your enemies, I think he meant don't kill them.

8. I've seen "America Bless God" stickers printed that way from the
manufacturer. It's letting everyone know that America needs to return to it's Christian roots.

It's also letting everyone know that the owner of the car clearly hasn't read their American history and beleives in a theocracy instead of a democracy.

Back away slowly and run. They are most likely nuts.

11. I Must Have A Different Understanding Of What The Word "Bless" Means...
Edited on Mon Apr-25-05 10:14 AM by arwalden
... I never figured that "bless" and "worship" were synonymous. Do mere mortal lay-humans have the power or authority to "bless" deities?

There are stickers that are pre-printed with that message? LOL... I guess these folks didn't want to buy one. The one I spotted was definitely home-made and it kind of had a ransom-note appearance about it.

14. THey're not necessarily synonymous... but look at what other bumper
stickers these people usually have on their car. Freedom isn't Free. W'04, etc...

I found "America BLESS God a bit odd, too. But I also find anyone believing that shrub is some sort of president also a bit odd!

15. It's a common phrase in some quarters - have seen/heard it for years
(never made sense to me either)

I've always assumed that it was just another expression which became corrupted over time, like "I could care less."

10. No that's an actual bumper sticker and "movement"...
...stated by a bunch of born again wackos right after 9-11. They are your basic nutjobs that bought into Falwell and his "we abandoned god and brought on the terrorist attacks ourselves" bullshit.

Those bumper stickers are everywhere down her in San Diego, they even have a website and have bought billboard space here.

I just ignore them...

16. Don't witches say their prayers backwards?
Blessed Be - instead of Be Blessed

I'd have trouble saying the Alphabet backwards, even if I was reading it, ha:Dha

19. I saw a road sign once
that said, "Bless God". I figure if there is a god, he, she or it doesn't need blessing.
