Are their pictures of ANY past president holding hands with a foreign head
of state or diplomat.

Out of the millions of pictures of Presidents all the way back to FDR, you'd think there must surely be at least one.

NOT photo shopped, please.

2. I vaguely remember a photo of Arafat kissing
someone in a previous administration, but I could be wrong. It was many years ago.

3. I doubt it
I remember the fuss when Carter kissed foreign dignitaries on the cheek, per custom in certain countries. I think I would have heard had he held hands.

6. You realize that men hold hands in Arabic countries?
Unless you have a pict of Mr.bush holding hands with someone who doesn't accept this as their cultural normal, it doesn't do more except give some of us a giggle and others roll their eyes at us.

8. WE don't accept it as the cultural norm
So it's really quite odd to see Bush, the ultimate macho bully, displaying this level of cultural sensitivity.

If nothing else, it illuminates just how deep are his ties with the Arab ruling class.

9. Good point. I'd still like to see pictures of other Presidents displaying
cultural sensitivity. Were all our past Presidents so insensitive that there are no pictures?

I'm not even sure how to go about Googlng this.

10. Glad you posted this as I wondered the same thing and
mentioned it in another thread. I googled images for Clinton and big bush, but couldn't find any of either of them kissing or holding hands with Saudi royals.

13. Mitterand & Kohl

Late French President Francois Mitterand and former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl hold hands during a historic meeting in 1984 at a soldier's cemetary in Verdun, a major battleground during World War I.

17. Different context, however
Edited on Mon Apr-25-05 05:39 PM by Boomer
This is a symbolic gesture, at a formal occassion, showing a bond between the two countries.

It's NOT Mitterand and Kohl strolling through a park and holding hands because they like each other.

20. Yes, it is... but isn't it nice to see a dignified display of unity
... between the leaders of two countries, rather than photos of a prince & a self-perceived king holding hands, joined in an unholy alliance?

23. French and German - not an American President. Hand clasp is not the
same thing as holding hands.

By the way, were their fingers entwined? Somehow that makes it more brrrrrrrrrr

25. Well, heck, you didn't specify past 'American' presidents
I just thought Mitterand & Kohl were a nice contrast to the recently published photos of the current WH Resident... I am just so sick of him, I just can't stand it.

Personally, this photo warms my heart... the President who wasn't inaugurated with the First Lady who should have been... sigh.
