May 17, 2005 - A Challenge To The Homophobes
This is what gutsy politicians would do on May 17th:

It's been a year since Massachussetts legalized same sex marriage. Rightwing Republicans and far right fundamentalist organizations turned this issue into an enormous national debate by threatening virtual Armaggedon for the American family if gay marriage were legalized.

Using gay and lesbians as their latest victims in a decades long line of "boogeymen" that will destroy America, rightwing republicans inflamed the debate and declared this one of the most important cultural issues of our time.

Well, the United States has now had legal gay marriage within its borders for one solid year.

A challenge to: George W Bush, Speaker Hastert, Bill Frist, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Gary Bauer, James Dobson, Alan Keyes and many, many others:

TELL US EXACTLY, WITH SPECIFICS, JUST HOW CIVIL GAY MARRIAGE HAS AFFECTED THE AMERICAN FAMILY IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS.

This is the social issue you said would destroy the fabric of society.

Tell us how it has. Give us figures and statistics.

We're waiting.

1. Dynamite post!

It's a simple fact: There is not a single, tangible measure of harm done to anyone, anywhere.

Fact.

2. Great post. I'm waiting for the answer.
My husband and I have been waiting with baited breath to know how our gay neighbors have destroyed our marriage. For the life of me, we don't see any difference in our marriage before and then after they moved in.

Hopefully, George W Bush, Speaker Hastert, Bill Frist, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Gary Bauer, James Dobson, Alan Keyes and the many, many others can finally, once and for all, clear up this big mystery for us.

5. excellent challenge...as I said at the time:
I"m a happily married heterosexual, and I am in no way harmed or even affected by allowing gays to marry. In fact, I know gay couples who have cohabited happily longer than many hetero marriages.

Why the homophobes felt it was a crime against marriage, but Michael Jackson's baby incubator marriage and the constant stream of quickie elvis marriages in Vegas aren't an assault against the "sanctity of marriage" is beyond me.

The ONLY VALID reason one should be worried about gay marriage is if they found one partner kinda cute and worried about them being taken out of circulation.

6. Thanks Ruggerson, awesome idea
and a vote for greatest pages for you. This happily married (for 31+ years) heterosexual has been nervously awaiting the destruction of my marriage because "homos" were allowed to marry somewhere. The divorce rate, and spousal abuse rate, and incest rate in this very red state (Mississipp) are sky high. I guess allowing Jim and John to get married forces bubba to fuck his daughter and beat his wife. Absurdity squared. Fuck you james dobson and the santorum you rode in on.

7. You know what chapped me?
The whore media would have their opinion-shpaing polls and ask questions like, "Do you believe that marriage is between a man and a woman?" They never asked a poll question like this:

DO YOU THINK IT'S ANY OF YOUR BUSINESS WHO SOMEONE ELSE LOVES?

Is it any of your business??? Didn't your mama teach you to mind your own business? Didn't your church warn you about judging others? Don't you trust that God can run the world without you?

11. Great idea
I was thinking today that in the last year or two, with all the screaming about gay marriage "undermining the sanctity of marriage" I have not heard ONE SINGLE WAY in which gay marriage "threatens" heterosexual marriage.

Has anyone heard any explanation at all? I keep waiting to hear it. I'm curious how I'm magically going to want a divorce when the gays down the road tie the knot.

14. The best they've been able to come up with...
Edited on Fri Apr-29-05 09:20 AM by Zenlitened
... and I use the word "best" with a hefty dose of sarcasm...

... is that allowing gays and lesbians to marry infringes upon the right of straight couples to have marriages as traditionally defined, between a man and a woman.

Seriously, I've heard them say that. It's pure bullshit, of course, and would be hysterical if these poisoned, emotionally stunted little mental patients didn't actually have themselves convinced they believe it.

I like the OP's idea a lot, and I'd extend it to include ordinary DUers as well. It'd be great to see letters to the editor in newspapers all across the country, noting that one year has gone by and the only noticeable effect has been an increase in love, happiness and security for gay and lesbian families.

Edited to add: I was wrong to call them mental patients. They're not patients, and that's the problem: They SHOULD be. They would benefit enormously by getting into counseling to find out why they are so obsessed with the love lives of complete strangers. Maybe some medication to help them get their compulsive thoughts under control. Seriously, this is not an issue of political philosophy or religious faith for the leaders of the anti-gay crusade. It's a sick fetish that has taken over their lives.

18. but even that argument of theirs is a tautology
their entire argument on this subject is nothing but a tautology. And as pointed out here by more than a few, the media lets them get away with it!

It's like living in some bizarre rightwing reality/non reality warp.

20. Yep, it sure is. But as you know... try to reason with one of them...
... and you'll get nowhere. They're not sane. They can argue 'round and 'round in circles forever, because they're in the grip of a sick compulsion. Gag.

13. That, Sir, They Will Be Utterly Unable To Do
The fact is the thing has not had, and cannot have, the slightest effect. Indeed, the oddest thing about this whole issue is its utter insignifigance and irrelevance. That is not to say it is insignifigant or irrelevant to gay couples; to them it is of great importance. But to the great proportion of people who are heterosexual, it makes no difference at all: it does not affect them or their relationships in the slightest, and cannot do so. Who you mate with, Sir, makes no difference at all to me, anymore than who I mate with makes any difference to you.

...neoconster bullies, you expect facts and analysis.

Of course you don't; you're a sane, reasonable person who has written an excellent post.

Thank you.

17. Unfortunately, they like to make stuff up.
Driving across country (with Christian Radio as the majority option) I heard Dobson explain EXACTLY how STATISTICALLY gay marriage effects straights. Are ya ready:

In Sweden, since the legalization of same sex marriage there have been more divorces and a decline in the marriage rate among heterosexuals. And the connection is.... THEY BOTH EXIST WITHIN THE SAME TIME FRAME!

So, by the same logic:

*Since Roe v. Wade there has been a rise in home computing.
*Since Brown v. Board of Education, hybrid fuel cars are more popular.
*After Scalia was nominated to the Supreme Court, Bill Clinton was elected.
*In 1991 short-lived Gulf War 1 ended, a few years later, the short-lived show COP ROCK, also ended.
*Bush was elected the year my grandmother died; hence, when Grandmothers die, Bushes will be elected.

19. Yeah, but I don't want to know about Sweden
I want them to tell us about the good ole' US of A.

Since it's been legal a year in Mass. Let them tell us about how Massachusetts has become the devil's playground since this occurred.

And support it with statistics.

We should all be demanding this.
