that getting treatment for cancer costs this much, although I've been to fundraisers here (Aust) for people with cancer too - we may get the treatment subsidised but people are still pretty heavilly out of pocket, you generally can't work through chemo etc and sometimes people need experimental treatment that you can't get here.

All that said having to figure out how to find this kind of scratch when you're very ill must be hideous - payday tommorrow will kick some (not worth much) aus dollars then

One of the many hideous hypocrisies in the recent Terri Schiavo case is that she had been in a permanent vegetative state for over 10 years, had no functioning brain higher centers, and had been cared for totally for all of that time only because there was enough money from litigations. Without cerebral cortex, there was no hope of her regaining personhood. Yet the neocons paraded around shouting about their reverence for the culture of life as they intruded in the most despicable way into this family's long-running tragedy.

There are many ordinary people who need an expensive medical procedure to save their life and are fully conscious, but the neocons are quite comfortable with letting them die because it saves money for their corporate cronies. And if a family spends everything they have and goes into debt to save a loved one's life, why, the neocons' new anti-bankruptcy bill means that they will never get out of that hole.

The hypocrisy of these heartless, greedy demagogues is bad enough, but what is worse is the fact that people are dying and families' lives are being ruined for the sake of ever-higher corporate profits. There's no end to it. And then we hear the neocons piously expounding as loudly as possible on how they represent "the culture of life" and the will of Jesus.

And don't get me started on how the promote the culture of life in places like Iraq or at the sites of their other crimes.
