OK, this actually came to me as a dream tonight. As you can tell it woke me up & disturbed me. I'll change some of the parts of this scenario, and it is 100% fictional. Here goes:
Fast forward in time to: Wednesday, October 29, 2008.
It's 9:25am EST and you are watching TV when one of those news media special urgent reports comes on to interrupt programming. The anchor takes you live to the financial district in lower Manhattan where some type of bomb has exploded and completely destroyed the New York Stock Exchange building. Other buildings in the area are heavily damaged. The initial death toll is already at least 1,000 persons. This is all the media knows initially as emergency personnel are still responding to the area to assist people and assess the situation. Fast forward to 10:10am EST and the news anchor reports a similar development in Washington D.C. There they report that a bomb has been found in a truck outside the Capitol building, and two men who were in the truck were arrested. A police officer stopped the truck initially because of "suspicious activity." The Govt. recognizes it's another terrorist attack and takes appropriate action. Fast forward to 11:35am EST, and we find that the bomb that exploded earlier in NYC was a small dirty nuke, and now all of lower Manhattan is contaminated with radiation. The death toll continues to rise. Fast forward to the next day at 8:40am EST, and FBI officials have found that the two men arrested in the truck in DC are natives of Iran and Syria, and reportedly have links to Al-Qaida (sp?)
Now, let's go back in time a little to Monday, July 28, 2008:
The nation is in the middle of a Presidential race. Let's say in this scenario that it's Wesley Clark & John Edwards for the Dems running against Jeb Bush and Bill Frist for the Repubs. The condition of our nation is worse than it has been in the past 8 years. Gas prices are well over $3/gallon, and touching $4/gallon on the West coast, inflation has worsened, unemployment is a big problem, and the deep recession the nation is in seems to have no end. Because of all this and the religious right's fanatical agenda, the GOP has really left a bad taste in people's mouths, and it shows. All polls, even Fox News show the Clark/Edwards ticket leading the Bush/Frist ticket by a margin of at least 62-37%. W, the GOP, and the religious right are very frightened by a probable regime change, and are scrambling for some momentum.
OK, let's fast forward again to the day after the terrorist attack: Thursday, October 30, 2008.
What does the Govt. and Bush regime do now? What would stop them from repealing Habeas Corpus and enacting Martial Law? Let's say the CIA can't find evidence of Syria or Iran supporting Al-Qaida (where the terrorists were from). What would stop W from invading both countries? Lastly, with an election coming up on Tuesday, November 4, what would stop W from suspending all elections until further notice because of "national security?"
I know this is all doom & gloom type stuff, but we need to think about these things.
