What should be done about Wilbanks (The Runaway Bride) |
|
She should be made to watch Julia Roberts movies for 7 days straight. They should include the movie "Runaway Bride" at least 12 times.
{/sarcasm} The State of Georgia should prosecute her to the most extreme level they can. The State of Georgia should spend millions of dollars investigating and prosecuting her and then jailing her for many years. The State should spend as much money as possible. The Georgia Lege should convene in a special session and enact a law that addresses this action specifically and spend as MUCH money as possible! {sarcasm}

I heard the prosecutors were going to hit her with criminal charges
This is such a sad thing ... of course, she was wrong to handle things the way she did by running away and then lying about it.
But as a young woman, I can relate to the fear and anxiety and apprehension she must have felt about such a huge wedding and all
Now, she's been terribly embarrassed before the entire nation and I'm sure she'll never live it down.
She will suffer for years because of what she did whether she gets charged or not, and it doesn't look like anybody was terribly hurt by her actions ... put out, yes ... but not really hurt.
So I think they should just leave her alone or at most, urge her to get some counseling ... Things like this need to be looked at with some human compassion especially since nobody was really harmed.

does that still count as a "young" woman?
I do agree with you that people, especially the media, should just leave her alone. Running away wasn't a crime, even if the whole town was put out by it.
IMO, she shoudl be charged with whatever the usual penalty for making a phoney 911 call is (what would that be? a fine and probation?).

|
Edited on Mon May-02-05 05:12 PM by dmordue
She did file a false report with the police where she accused an annonymous couple of abducting her - at that point she broke that law and like anyone should be charged.
Running way is legal - making false accusations to the police is not. She crossed the line.

10. I'm torn with mixed emotions |
|
At first, I wanted the book thrown at her. But that was mainly due to bitterness about how the media has been covering this nonstop (without thinking to cover the thousands of other women and children missing in this country); and also the way she tried to pin the crime on Hispanics. However, it isn't fair that she should go to jail or be sued because she exercised her right to disappear. The call to 911 was stupid; however, she was probably SO SHOCKED when she realized how much media attention she was getting that she just did something really stupid. Is she a spoiled brat? Most likely. But she probably had no idea that she would get so much attention.
Maybe her parents did this on purpose to teach her a lesson? I heard she has pulled stunts like this in the past.

if you are stupid enough to try to go over the falls or some other such stupid stunt that puts people in danger just trying to rescue your sorry ass. For her, she didn't put anyone in danger, but she should have contacted the police as soon as she knew that there was such a circus about her leaving.
I'd say send her a bill if she knew they were looking for her as a hostage or murdered person or whatever and failed to call off the search on her own.

|
The only thing she did was briefly claim someone had abducted her. She made those claims which, she quickly recanted, in another state so she doesn't owe Georgia anything and the other state declined to charge her.
If she made false claims to the Feds I guess she could be charged but they wont want to.
Shit happens.

The poor woman, she is the one that has a legitamate complaint. All she did was take a bus ride, she sees the news and wham, all of a sudden she somehow is to blame.
If someone is to blame it is the one that yanked the Duluth Police Chiefs chain to start looking before 24 hours had elapsed in her disappearance.
No wonder she is a nervous wreck with future family like that.
Edit: Do you think if a poor Hispanic or a black woman disappeared that there would have been a search initiated so soon. I doubt it. The police would probably said "why not check some crack house down in Atlanta" before lifting a single pinky

27. Well she did make a false report of being abducted |
|
she called 911 and said she was abducted by a HISPANIC male and a white female.
She also left a false 'clue' of her clothing that she threw out the bus window.
If she was so distraught about her wedding, she should have done what thousands upon thousands of people do every day--CANCEL THE FUCKING WEDDING. Posphone it. Send a letter. Make a phone call. No big deal.
Leave a note for your loved ones "Hey--I need some time to think. I'm okay, and I'll call you in a few days"
She is a putz that wasted THOUSANDS of dollars of taxpayer money looking for her sorry lying ass.
Fuck her and the bus she rode to NM on. She's a liar, a spoiled brat, and she should be charged with making false claims, ESPECIALLY since she pulled the 'race card' and, just like Susan Smith, accused an otherwise innocent 'everyman' of a certain race (in her case, a Hispanic, in Smith's case, a black male) of her own self-created crime. Nothing like a little bigotry to add to the mix, eh?

Is it her fault the cops decided to launch a $100,000 search?
She decides to take off. She's an adult, she owes nobody an explanation. She learns of the search, she calls "home" (Duluth, GA police) and makes up the abduction story. She then recants, and admits she left on her own. It doesn't matter if she claims the abductor was hispanic, black, white, or an alien.
She's suffered more than she deserves, let her alone to work things out with her family and fiance.

"Fuck her and the bus she rode to NM on. She's a liar, a spoiled brat"
You don't know her from Adam, and you know nothing about what has gone on in her life that may have a bearing on her actions.
She has, and will, suffer tremendously for the rest of her life because she has embarrassed herself not only in her own town among her friends and family, but to the whole nation.
Yes, she screwed up big time, and yes we all know there was a much better way she could have handled this.
But it is very troubling to see someone as confused as she apparently is have to endure not only all that embarrassment, but also people who talk about her in the coldest, cruelist and most foul language
As for those thousands of dollars, the police get paid whether they are checking out problems or eating donuts during a lull. Nobody REALLY got hurt here, at least not in the criminal sense, yet that Duluth sheriff is acting like she was Timothy McVeigh or somebody like that.
A little understanding and compassion isn't too much to ask, unless we're going to sink as low as those heartless Repugs.

Oh, so you're saying the $100,000 was money that wasn't, like, normal recurring overhead ... that it was incremental money they had to spend solely because of her actions?
If that's what you believe, then show us a link that says it.
I thought this was Democratic Underground, not Repugs anonymous.

If they wanted to advertise on networks devoted to frivolous bullshit, there are several out there pushing much better "reality" TV than the Wilbanks story.
Not that it'll happen, I'm just sayin... If I were paying out the wazoo to advertise on the Cartoon Network and they started showing live music videos 24/7 I'd wonder where my money was going. Same with the news channels.

Pardon my venom but it pisses me off royally that she:

B) The imbecile provided the media with a week long diversion from whatever the bush reich is doing.

Bill mentioned that the State had spent $100k on her. Interestingly, the woman mentioned that the family happened to be offering a $100k reward for her...
So, the lady suggested that the family repay the state.
Additionally, I think the bride should be fined. Nothing severe. Just something to let her know that she wasted a lot of resources and potentially put people in danger.
