http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-pavlis05.html Schaumburg woman convicted in the beating death of her 6-year-old adopted son apologized for her actions, but that didn't spare Irma Pavlis from a 12-year prison term -- or a scathing rebuke from the Cook County judge who imposed the sentence.
Judge Thomas Fecarotta ripped Pavlis, saying Wednesday she is trying to evade responsibility for the December 2003 death of Alex Pavlis, a Russian child adopted six weeks earlier by Pavlis and her husband. A jury in April acquitted Irma Pavlis of first-degree murder charges but convicted her of a lesser count of involuntary manslaughter. snip
But Fecarotta said any behavioral problems the child exhibited didn't explain or justify the punches, slaps and shoves Pavlis said she used to try to discipline the boy, who died of severe brain injuries. snip
During her trial, Pavlis testified that within two weeks of bringing Alex here from Russia, she began slapping and spanking him as punishment for his unruly behavior, which included banging his head on walls or floors and sometimes urinating or defecating on himself.
