11. Just keep this in mind...
...no matter how huge it is, it will only be truly huge if the mainstream media finds time to cover it between "who did Paula Abdul screw," "Does Paula Abdul have a substance abuse problem," "Runaway bride," "Michael Jackson," and "Laura Bush's saucy stand-up zingers."

IN SHORT:

It's gonna have to be VERY, VERY, VERY "huge" for it to be more than a momentary blip on the radar.

Even if it is, someone will "find" something suspicious in New York, and it will make the front pages.

Look at what the Bush administration has already gotten away with, and what they're GETTING away with while we speak.

Hate to be a Doubting Thomas, but I'll believe this one when I see it.

:toast:

Looks like Abramoff sang like a bird. In my opinion.

I can't remember how many times in the last 4 years I've said to myself "this is it, this is the story that's going to take them down". I've come to the conclusion that even if Bush got caught naked in the oval office with half a dozen 12 year old boys, it would be ignored in order to bring us the "real news". You know, Paula, Michael, and The Runaway Bride. If by some miracle they do get the administration in the corner, they will just pull out the trump card, probably Osama or another attack on the U.S.

I joined DU in Sept or Oct of 2003 and it seems like its a daily event where somebody posts, "This is what is finally going to bring Bush down..." and, everybody responding to the OP gets all excited and we work ourselves up into a frenzy.... and then - nothing.

26. google FEC
There is lots of statutory and case law on the legalized bribery of american politicians. They are called 'campaign contributions' and 'PAC money' and so forth.

Just because Abramoff's lobbying firm gave a bunch of money to SmirkCo doesn't mean its illegal. If they filled out all the right forms, its legal bribery.

the MSM won't pick this up...they would rather focus on Molester Jackson and the runaway bride...

and how will this stick to the white house...since their dirty tactics to get themselves in there...twice...nothing has stuck to them...it all gets swept under the carpet and they move on...

even still...I'm curious to see what comes of this...

Give Back Abramoff's Money
Posted on Wednesday, March 31 @ 08:43:44 EST by SwansonAdmin

Campaign Finance - corruption, reform Following the revelations in the Washington Post of Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff's receipt of $10 million in previously undisclosed payments from Michael Scanlon, a former spokesman for House Majority Leader Tom Delay, the Committee to ReDefeat the President called on legislators and PACs that have recently received contributions from Abramoff to give the money back. According to records available from the Center for Responsive Politics, this list includes: George W. Bush, Tom Delay, Johnny Isakson, Eric Cantor, John Ensign, Charles H. Taylor, Arlen Specter, Richard Pombo, Christopher S 'Kit' Bond, Jim Saxton, Tom Feeney, Jim Bunning, Ernest J. Istook, Chuck Grassley, Richard C. Shelby, Chris Cannon, Curt Weldon, Doug Ose, Dana Rohrabacher, George R Nethercutt, Jr., Americans for a Republican Majority, Hawkeye PAC, First Freedoms Fund, Republican Majority Fund, Rich PAC, Keep Our Majority PAC, Leadership PAC 2002, Senate Victory Fund, and Rely on Your Beliefs. Additional contributions from a Pam or Pamela Abramoff, listed sometimes as a homemaker and other times as an employee of Preston Gates & Ellis, have been made to Mark Foley, Eric Cantor, Johnny Isakson, Arlen Specter, and George W. Bush.

As the Washington Post wrote on 3/30:

Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff received $10 million in previously undisclosed payments from a public relations executive whom he recommended for work with wealthy Indian tribes that operate casinos, congressional investigators have determined.

Abramoff, one of Washington's best-connected Republican lobbyists, this month was forced out of his firm, Greenberg Traurig, after revelations that he and the executive -- Michael S. Scanlon, a former spokesman for House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) -- had persuaded four newly wealthy tribes to pay them fees of more than $45 million over the past three years. That amount rivals spending on public policy by some of the nation's biggest corporate interests.

In a letter sent to Abramoff late yesterday, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said investigators on his staff "have recently learned that Michael Scanlon or organizations with which he was in some way associated . . . recently paid you approximately $10 million."

Find the fuck up and make him pay but not the great, good man----we feel soooo sorry for the great man and all those bad people around him who do dumb and terrible things. Jesus probably had the same trouble with the disciples. Move on you disgusting liberal jackals always playing politics and tring to discredit the second son of Christ, blah, blah, blah. Need I go on??? You by now should have it all memorized. Wonder what the next great scandle that is NOT going to even be reported will be................ Let's face it, we are stuck with this asshole for 4 more years AND we are never going to turn the country (or even our Dem politicians) against him.

42. The story is up at raw story now
Bush Florida 2000 recount committee still owes lobbyist's former firm $320k

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.

If so, the photograph taken of President George W. Bush and embattled House Majority Leader Tom DeLay was priceless—the windswept DeLay strutting down the tarmac beside the president, two Republican leaders rankled by political setbacks joined at the hip.

There’s a backstory that lurks behind Bush’s decision to stand by DeLay. It involves Greenberg Traurig, the firm that employed the powerful lobbyist who paid for palatial DeLay junkets, and Abramoff staffers, who were footsoldiers in the Florida recount. Greenberg Traurig has yet to receive more than $320,000 in legal fees charged to a Bush committee during the 2000 Florida recount, RAW STORY can confirm.

As a corporation, Greenberg’s unpaid tab represents a massive in-kind campaign contribution, far larger than anything that went unreported by DeLay. But it appears to be legal: corporations are allowed to donate any amount to the nebulous type of committee employed during the recount. It would, however, violate the committee's self-imposed $5,000 contribution limit from individual donors.
