The Theory of Relativity should be removed from Physics Textbooks |
|
Or at the very least, there should be a disclaimer on the inside cover that General and Special Relativity are only Theories, and that if the bible doesn't mention them, well, how reliable can they be.
Ditto for Quantum Theory.
I think we should all call our representatives about it.
See how stupid anti-evolutionist rhetoric sounds when you apply it to any other accepted scientific theory?

Actually, I have heard fundies who proudly proclaim that "the Bible is the first source to recognize that the earth was round" (which is bullshit of course). The Bible recognizes a round earth, but uses the model laid out by Aristotle that has a geocentric universe.
Looks like the Bible was wrong on that one! Uh oh!
And, BTW, just as an aside:
The reason we don't fall off the round earth is because God's will keeps us on the ground.

That was such a fun site! I started reading some of the links, and, of course, eventually ended up at Snopes to get origin stories. (I heart Snopes!)
I can't believe anyone actually fell for the 'DHMO scare', but leave it to the govt. to go batshit about something as insane as this... (I guess all that emphasis on readin', writin', and 'rithmetic doesn't leave any room for basic chemistry!)
Here's an excerpt:"In March 2004 the California municipality of Aliso Viejo (a suburb in Orange County) came within a cat's whisker of falling for this hoax after a paralegal there convinced city officials of the danger posed by this chemical. The leg-pull got so far as a vote having been scheduled for the City Council on a proposed law that would have banned the use of foam containers at city-sponsored events because (among other things) they were made with DHMO, a substance that could "threaten human health and safety."
Now I'm just depressed at how stupid Americans really are...

14. These people seem confused about the words "fact" and "theory". |
|
Of course Darwin's theory of evolution is "only a theory". But it is a theory about the fact of evolution. I am never sure what these "creationists" are on about. Are they saying that evolution is a fact and creationism is a better theory than Darwin's to explain the fact of evolution? Or are they saying that evolution never happened. In which case they are not disputing a theory, but denying a fact.

18. Depends on who you talk to |
|
Most acknowledge evolution (how could they not) but credit "Intelligent Design" as being a better theory than Darwin's to explain it.
At the OJ Simpson trial DNA evidence was presented that showed conclusively (odds 5,000,000,000:1) that it was OJ's blood at the crime scene. At a certain point, you have to give up. People believe what they want to believe.

IMO the problem is money. The church can afford to bombard the public and school boards with so called "expert" testimony supporting ID.
Interesting that growing up in the 60s I never once heard evolution described as being "controversial". This is not good.

27. They are seizing upon the common understanding of a term... |
|
... which has specialized meaning within science. The term "theory" in science means some idea has scientific merit (because it has undergone scrutiny, examination of the evidence and reproducible experimentation), but that it can be subject to revision if new evidence appears.
The starting point to the scientific examination of an idea is a hypothesis, a "what-if." That's what the fundies actually mean when they use the term, "theory."
Whether they are using "theory" in that sense because their understanding of science is miniscule, or because they intend to corrupt the scientific meaning of the word in the public mind isn't important--they're still using the term incorrectly.
Funny thing, though--they still seem to believe in Social Darwinism, a political idea discredited as science decades ago.... :)

as well. Not to mention electricity and magnetism, quantum mechanics, and optics. It's always interesting to me that the fundies who scream that evolution is "only a theory" don't seem to realize that a theory is a hypothesis that has been proven almost beyond the shadow of a doubt. I think they confuse theories with hypotheses.
