The commentary in this DU thread, "Living Under Fascism," paticularly a reference to Time Magazine's 1934 complementary cover story about Mussolini, prompted me to do some research, which uncovered this interesting article from the Executive Intelligence Review, June 25, 2004:

Although Luce later promoted the turn away from fascism, when it was necessary to defeat Hitler, he heralded the postwar policy of the Anglo-American Synarchists with his famous 1941 Life magazine editorial, "The American Century," which announced the Synarchist goal of Anglo-American world domination at the close of the war. Luce wrote: "We must accept whole-heartedly our duty and our opportunity as the most powerful and vital nation in the world and in consequence to exert upon the world the full impact of our influence, for such purposes as we see fit and by such means as we see fit." The editorial was mass-produced and circulated widely; it appeared in full in the Washington Post and Reader's Digest. Although he did not include the point in this editorial, Luce would soon argue, also in the pages of Life, for preventive nuclear war against the Soviet Union.

2. Pres. Truman told Luce "Your job is to inform the American people

but what you do is misinform!" during a meet at the St Louis airport....this was following the 'who lost china' bs that followed the Communist defeat of nationalist forces....Luce's time/life magazines were relentless in accusing the Truman Gov. of not helping the puppet nationalists in the civil war...Truman and Luce crossed paths at the airport, and Luce eagerly went to shake Truman's hand when Truman insulted Luce's integrity...times were different then though...Luce could only dream of what bush has wrought and he dare not try mess with Truman (who still confounds repukelicans cuz he was a card carrying liberal democrat, and remained so until he died)
