It strikes me that there are probably some DUers who are hesitant to donate, recalling (correctly) that there are a lot of scams percolating through the internet. So here's the deal: If you make a first
donation between the timestamp on this post and midnight PST, and later on, until 30 days from today decide that it was a mistake or that you feel you have been scammed, I will refund your donation. Now, I'm not the most prominent member of DU by any stretch, but I've been here a lot longer than my profile shows (a long story including some unpleasantness over a post, that isn't relevant) and sometimes I get a bit outspoken but that's just because I'm an old phart who's seen the worst and the best in my 63 years.

You could look at my eBay feedback for a minimal bit of information, I suppose (my username there is karlschneider, same as here but without the middle initial 'r')

And want to remind all of us, I had zero time to set things up - accounts, lawyers, anything. I agree. There are a LOT of scams. And, fwiw, today I had to block my own card because someone stole my id after I set up an Ebay account. (In the middle of everything, running to pull our cash and blocking our cards. Wipes brow.)

But, as Skinner said rightly, you have to make your own decision. Evaluate the facts in hand. There's no shame in taking care of yourself.

Doug and I are public figures in San Francisco. If I ever tried to get out of even a parking ticket, our lives would be over in a heartbeat.

I have twice emailed the suggested addresses to let them know if you've donated but both times the email bounced back. Does anyone know if the collection is over and how much was donated? I don't understand why their emails didn't go through.

I do hope it's my computer, they both came back with a "this user doesn't have an address with yahoo.com" But I also wonder how many others have not been able to get through. It could be because I don't have a yahoo address, although I've never had a problem before with sending to yahoo addresses. Nonetheless if you got through then it's working somewhere along the line.

But don't know if it worked.
I'm staying in a hotel that has a wireless internet connection that totally sucks! It only sort of works late at night and early in the morning on sites that doesn't have much graphics. My home email is cut off since I sold my house, and that is the email paypal has. Anyway, I managed to get paypal to come up and sent $20 (I'm kind of broke), but don't know if paypal will cancel the transmission if the confirmation email bounces.
I tried to PM the person in charge of adding donations, but the PM never left my puter, so I figured I post here.

Since my email addy doesn't work anymore, the paypal money was sent from [e-mail]
If it doesn't make it, try to PM me, I can mail a check but it won't be there in time for the Monday deadline.

I have totally lost hope in this country and I'm leaving, but seeing all the help coming from so many people, to one person in need, that most of us don't know, makes me think that maybe, there is some hope for this country, this planet and mankind after all.
