15. Inspirational quotes
Edited on Sun May-08-05 11:28 PM by ailsagirl
In the depths of winter I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer
-Camus

I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.
-Maya Angelou

We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.
-Churchill

In helping others, we shall help ourselves, for whatever good we give out completes the circle and comes back to us.
-Flora Edwards

There are only two forces in the world, the sword and the spirit. In the long run the sword will always be conquered by the spirit.
-Napolean

The truly brave are soft of heart and eyes,
And feel for what their duty bids them do.

20. And, for the THIRD time today, I get to post my favorite Einstein quote:

A human being is a part of the whole, called by us, "Universe," a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security. —Albert Einstein

27. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful...
I've got a good one from George Bernard Shaw:

This is the true joy of life, the being used up for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clot of ailments and grievances, complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the community, and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it what I can.

31. OOOOOOOOH! I hadn't heard that before - and from Shaw!
I wouldn't have guessed he said that. It has now been added to my collection. Okay, here's another one of my all-time favorites:

In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit. –Albert Schweitzer, philosopher, physician, and musician (1875-1965)

36. I love Schweitzer... what a humanitarian!!
Here are a couple more:

The quality of mercy is not strain'd,
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath: it is twice blest;
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
-Shakespeare

If there is any kindness I can show,
Or any good thing I can do to any fellow being,
Let me do it now, and not deter or neglect it,
As I shall not pass this way again.
-William Penn

37. I had to memorize Portia's Quality of Mercy speech in grade school
Edited on Mon May-09-05 12:36 AM by Nothing Without Hope
but have forgotten much of it. I only knew part of Penn's quote - good one! I especially love the Schweitzer quote because of its profound humanity - he had low times too and found great comfort and new purpose from his connection with others and, I iimagine, from his music and other sources. But especially from other people, the special ones who can rekindle tht inner light.

OK, how about a little Emerson? And the GARDEN PATCH is a shoutout for Andy's special benefit!

A Successful Life:

To laugh often and much;
to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty;
to find the best in others;
to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

17. Just wondered if there were any monsters that really freaked you out big
Edited on Sun May-08-05 11:48 PM by Valerie5555
time, for maybe again you could name your tumor after the big scary monster, the way some kid with a brain tumor named his tumor "Frankenstein," "Frank" for short," and his family sold "Frank must die" bumperstickers on E bay to raise money for his medical expenses, and the last I heard the kid was doing okay and the monster tumor "Frank" was dead as a doornail so far.

Who knows I may also even google "Frank Must Die," for you and everyone else.

On edit 1 :scared:y thing may be how the general anesethesia may make you :puke:, especially if you didn't expect that, I knew about that stuff from some dental work I needed since I learned the hard way that running in cumbersome boots is NOT a good idea.
