Those poor limo owners... Everyone say "awwww".
http://www.detnews.com/2005/autosinsider/0505/11/1auto-178455.htm

WASHINGTON - The limousine industry hopes a tiny item in a $295 billion highway construction bill will free it from paying a 1970s tax intended to prevent carmakers from producing gas guzzling vehicles...

...Since then, Lefkowitz said, the gas guzzler tax has hit the small manufacturers that convert vehicles into stretch limousines and reduced their numbers from 300 to 20. It also has driven up costs for limousine companies, overwhelmingly small operations with one to three vehicles, he said.

"There are a number of ironies here," Lefkowitz said. "We are fuel efficient. We are multipassenger. We're taking cars off the road, and here we are still paying the gas guzzler."

All together now. Everyone say "awwww".

1. Sell the limo, buy a hybrid, open a cab service...
Then we'll talk.

2. Can they be considered "hybrids" because
they carry both petroleum and martinis?

6. overwhelmingly small operations with one to three vehicles,
That's right, lets run some more small businesses out of business.

Is the lack of sympathy because of your perception only the rich can be in limos? SUV owners don't get hit with this.

8. that's what is really unfair
every vehicle that gets under 20 mpg should have to pay it.

BTW, around here, the local cab company is the one who owns the limo. If they went out of business, the blind and other people who can't drive would be in a world of hurt.
