Dean Seeks Prog-Dem Peace Pact
Just saw this in passing, what does this mean ?

Dean Seeks Prog-Dem Peace Pact

May 11, 2005

MONTPELIER, Vt. -- If Democrats give Bernie Sanders a clear shot at the U.S. Senate next year, Progressives should return the favor by staying out of other races.

That's the view of former Gov. Howard Dean, who now is chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

Dean said the election of the independent Sanders to the U.S. Senate would be good for Democrats nationally, because Sanders works well with Democrats in Washington.

He said he understands that some Vermont Democrats would like to run for the seat being opened by the retirement of Sen. James Jeffords.

Dean said if Democrats agree not to run for the Senate, Progressives should agree not to run for other statewide offices like the U.S. House and lieutenant

1. It means he
doesn't want the Progressive Party eating up the seat Bernie is vacating. Basically, he's ceding the Senate seat to the Progressive Party and asking that they let the Dems take the vacated House seat. A fair deal.

7. WTF??? Bernie is a socialist
Edited on Wed May-11-05 09:23 PM by paineinthearse
If the VT dems do not put up a candidate, thus assuring his victory (result will be he will caucus with them), what the hell does this have to do with progressive dems NOT running candidates in other races?

Or perhaps I am misunderstanding "other races". It would matter if it is narrowly defined as Vermont, or is this nationwide?

9. I think he means third party challenges, not progressive Dem challenges

In other words avoiding stuff like when some Greens wanted to run a candidate against Wellstone in MN, etc. Where we get along we should get along, in other words.

11. Sanders runs under the "Progressive Party"
This isn't referring to "progressives". It refers to Sanders' party.

13. He actually runs as an independent now
but the Progressive Party has endorsed him in the past. He ran for mayor on their ticket.

12. get a grip
he's talking about third party candidates only in the state of Vermont.

Dean will let Sanders take the Senate seat and they will let Dems take the house and other seats.

Did you really think the DNC chairman would discourage Democrats from running? If you did, slap yourself. :eyes:

8. Great idea
A nasty contested election in Vermont will justify progressive fears that even cooperative politicians with progressive views will be trampled in favor of anything breathing with a D attached. It reinforces the idea, so rarely acted on, that we are more or less in this together in opposing the worst excesses of the Bush admin.
