Hugo Chavez vs. Islam Karimov: Republican hypocrisy |
|
Can you imagine what would happen if Hugo Chavez's troops massacred unarmed protestors? Every Republican and neocon in the world would be screaming about how he must be removed, there'd be sanctions thrown on Venezuelan oil in a nanosecond, and he'd probably be couped 2 weeks later. But as for Karimov, we'll probably get a fairly harsh statement at best.
So a democratically elected president who has spent most of his term improving life for the poor of his nation is a major threat and problem, while a guy who only wins elections the same way Saddam and spends his whole time consolidating power for himself and his cronies and carrying out torture is perfectly fine. OK...

1. Oh, you can bet that if Hugo Chavez's troops killed.. |
|
..but ONE protestor, Chavez would be immediately defined as the next Saddam Hussein. The funny thing is that he's almost at that point even though his actions are more in the spirit of democracy than Bush and Republicans have ever demonstrated.
