But the clothes at fashion week could have a somber lining and be a harbinger of a weak economy ahead, he said.

"Designers are surprisingly good at predicting the future, and this is the second or third season in a row that I've seen very few job interview clothes," Deeny said.

"My gut feeling is they don't believe the economy is suddenly going to get better. Even if it's all very bright and pretty and feminine, it's like everyone is taking time off still. It's sabbatical chic. I don't see the word 'career'."
