Connection between Iraq war and "the nuclear option": Lust for Absolutism |
|
The underlying reason for the war in Iraq, as the Downing Street memo makes excrutiatingly clear, is that Bush wanted to have it. It had nothing to do with weapons of mass destruction. Nothing to do with the murder of Iraqi people by its own government. Nothing to do with alleged violations of international law. The only "reasons" for the war, if appetites can be dignified with such a label, lay inside the Bush boy's pea brain.
Similarly, the Republicans, who threw every obstacle in the path of Clinton's nominees to the federal bench, denying 67 from even getting a "fair hearing" and "the straight up and down vote these fine men and women deserve," now expect that every last choice of Bush be given that chance--though it's only 10(TEN!!! Compared to 67!!!) who haven't been able to clear the committee.
What is the connection, besides pigheadedness? Isn't it that the Republicans are trying to create the conditions for a sort of absolute monarchy? They don't even seem to care what the people think. Now that they're in power, they want total control.

there was a meeting at some point after the 2000 election, and someone (probably Cheney) said, "Alright, now's our chance...is everyone ready?" counting on Democrats to be half-asleep.
They were right. Or maybe half-right.

2. Actually, the Council on National Policy (Viguerie's brainchild) |
|
has been plotting this takeover for years. This is the same organization that locked its doors and refused to allow a transcript of Bush's remarks to it in 1999 to be released to the media. Their goal has always been to remake the US into a doctrinaire fundamentalist Christian society. They have been drooling about getting their hands on the courts for thirty years--or longer.

4. They have slightly different agendas, but their objectives meld |
|
CNP wants to bring on the apocalypse; PNAC wants to reform the Middle East into a Wal-Mart and Israel friendly wonderland. They're both willing to use tactical nuclear weapons to achieve their objectives.
But CNP also wants theocracy. PNAC is willing to look the other way if they can just use the GOP's control of the military to project a new American century into the foreseeable future.

5. Fits in nicely with the religious right's push for moral absolutism |

and tight social control. Coincidence? I think not.
