"Arianna correctly points out that today's New York Times story on Iraq is, by far, the most important news out there today (you might not know it from the Beltway media's masturbatory hyperventilating about the filibuster fight). The key segment of the article quotes a military officer saying "the success of American goals in Iraq was not assured." He said, "I think that this could still fail."

This is really bad news for our country on a number of levels. The only good news is that at least rank-and-file officers are willing to be honest with Americans where the Bush administration has made an art out of lying. From early on, however, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld indicated that we were going to be lied to about all of this. As he said at his confirmation hearing in on January 11, 2001:"

I will admit that I have been caught up in this Judiciary mess to the point of freaking out. After all, I am in a especially vulnerable class of citizens: the abjectly poor. Every once in a while, I need to hear from someone with the intellect of a Sirota, to get a little perspective on matters, and he does tend to deliver that.

Remember this, about judges: They tend to be transformed by the position. Ok, so Scalia and Thomas are exceptions to that rule, but still, they get into new surroundings and social circles and they, like us, change. Perhaps they see the gravity of their actions and decisions. Or perhaps they no longer feel particularly beholden to their previous masters. Who know. But they do change. History is clear on that.

That said, The Dems are fighting the good fight. I suspect that they are also being woken up from their torpor. That is a Good Thing.

On Edit, One more thing: I didn't start getting good at tournement karate until I lost a few matches. It made me reconsider and refine tactics. Ponder that. I do.
