Right vs. Left: Absolute power vs. checks and balances
I think this is a good way to describe the difference between the right and left in a nutshell. What's going on in the Senate is a perfect illustration of this. The right wing stands for absolute power, while progressives stand for checks and balances. The right wing believes that the landlord should have absolute power over the tenants, while progressives believe tenants should have some rights and protections. The right wing believes that an employer should have the absolute power to fire an employee for any reason, while progressives believe that employees should have rights. The right wing believes that the majority should have absolute power to strip the minority of their rights, while progressives believe that all Americans have civil rights.
