U.S. military investigating whether troops defiled Koran

MIAMI - (KRT) - A U.S. Army general was still investigating Thursday whether U.S. forces ever flushed a Koran down a toilet at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, according to a spokesman for the Southern Command.

Army Gen. Bantz Craddock, the Southcom commander, ordered the inquiry on May 11 - and soldiers have been scouring base documents ever since, said Southcom spokesman Raul Duany....

Craddock ordered the sweeping investigation of detainee abuse allegations at Guantanamo on Jan. 5, after the American Civil Liberties Union uncovered internal FBI e-mails that described sordid interrogation booth details.

FBI agents wrote their headquarters about a year ago, in the aftermath of the Abu Ghraib, Iraq, scandal of witnessing, firsthand, troubling treatment by the U.S. military of foreign captives - prisoners being chained for up to 24 hours, left in their own feces and urine in super-hot or icy cold rooms. One FBI agent described seeing a captive wrapped in an Israeli flag, apparently to humiliate him, in an e-mail written even as the military at Guantanamo flatly denied an Israeli flag was ever used.
