I Don't Care If The Holy Bible Is Burned Or Not
Edited on Fri May-20-05 09:18 AM by matcom
Why should I be worried about indulging the superstitions of other people when there's a host of REAL problems that need fixing?

Especially when the Bible promotes discrimination, misogyny, and all sorts of other stuff that might have worked for the Disciples, but hardly works today, as evidenced by all the riots and violence done in that book's name.

Protestors, read your holy book(s) if you must, but stop holding the rest of the world hostage demanding some special mystical respect for your ideas (and only your ideas) that you would never accord to anyone else.

note #2: I'm an Atheist but would love to see if this thread is treated any differently

4. It wouldn't be so bad
if most of these "Christians" really followed ALL of Jesus's teachings instead of picking and choosing wich rules to follow and which ones to ignore.

8. How about the B.S. excuse that they are "forgiven" for their sins?
So in other words, they commit the sin because they know full well they will be "forgiven anyway". :eyes:

My, isn't that "convenient"?! Isn't that "special"?!

5. What the hell are you trying to do? Restart the Crusades???
Ooops...** beat you to that one!

I'm sure that we're all aware that Christianity has never been used to perpetuate violence or bloodshed. I'm sure that burning a Bible wouldn't be a reason for some to go berserk and become violent or anything.

7. Sacred/Schmacred!
Would I RIOT if someone pooped on a cheap copy of the constitution. Would I go berserk if someone burned a flag?
No. No. No.
You can't burn or kill IDEAS.
I would still believe in the genius of Jefferson and Madison if someone trashed a copy of the bill of rights.
If I was a christian, I would still believe in my god, even if someone removed all supernatural references from a bible.
The whole argument is ridiculous. The problem is this "sacred" baloney. Theocratic egotists will tell us that we HAVE (!) to respect the word of their "God". Again, baloney. They need "sacredness" to keep up appearances, or the emperor in the sky has no robes.
That said, I have never personally dunked pages of ANY book in ANY potty ANYWHERE!
Plumbing is sacred to me...

11. Their "BEST" plumbing is a trench
so they can't even visualize a toilet with clean running water!
I would like to take a small bible out and bury it every time some xtian abuses another person with their ignorant platitudes of religion! There should be some way to let the future know that the bible or any other religious writing was never accepted by all!

28. We would fight off an attack...
...irrespective of whether they were burning our Bibles. During such an event a Bible buring would hardly be noticed, I would think.

13. I've long since given up trying to understand the Muslem mind
Even under western-born Muslems who break every rule in the book (except during Ramadan), there are values that simply differ from us.

There is no point in comparing this to Christianity. Us Jesus-freaks have been around a lot longer and maybe we simply had more time to question some of the fundamentals of our religion.

It is at best peculiar that flushing a Q'uran sparks a bigger reaction than murder and torture, but then again murder and torture are a daily reality in most Islamic countries.

Regardless, when hundreds of thousands across the globe protest and riot your actions you should take the hint. Look what happened the last time we ignored that.

14. Also, I personally don't care if anybody burns our flag, but...
...look at how many people here get upset over that.

The flag is just cloth, the Bible and the Q'uran are just paper.

Now if they were to steal our mascot...THAT would piss me off.

15. If we have any hope at all of understanding Muslims...
We have to try to understand each other. I'm not religious, but as long as people respect the fact that I don't believe in a biblical messiah, I'll respect the fact that they do. There's no "right" or "wrong" here, unless we start using religion, or a lack of it, as a tool for political discussion.

19. But religion is ALWAYS a tool for political discussion
The problem is that the constitutional balance we pushed for is being destroyed.

Religion CANNOT exist as a non-governing entity. Its very nature -- control of people through superstition and mysticism -- REQUIRES at some point it's ability to impose itself on the entire society.

Thus, we see the erosion of our own Constitution and the crusades/jihads of various "faiths" all with one goal in mind -- kill or convert everyone else.

Hornets are stupid and mean and they sting people and I don't agree w/ their philosophy anyway and I'm not living underneath it so I won't get stung.

You know what, I'm an atheist and I think any "holy book" is idiotic superstion, but I ALSO think it's idiotic to desecrate them when you know it's going to inflame their followers. Just common sense.

Note: Just supporting your point Matcom, I got it...

22. Their followers are already inflamed by the simple fact that. . .
. . . you and I exist at all!

We are to be converted (by force of some sort, either government or terrorism) or liquidated if we cannot be "saved."

29. Bollocks
Let's put paid for this once and for all - Bin Laden himself said that if he hated freedom he would have attacked Sweden!

Most muslims don't give a flying fxck what happens in America, it's a long way away from them. They do seem to get upset when bombs fly down on thier heads for no apparent reason.

In fact, before all this War on Terror crap most muslim youngsters saw America as a place to go for an education, freedom etc. I lived in a muslim country in the 90's and most of the young guys were into rap, hollywood action films, (english football), and wore baseball caps and NBA and American football shirts.
