Would you volunteer to teach on weekends or evenings?
Edited on Fri May-20-05 03:56 PM by Cleita
It seems like a huge segment of our population is suffering from appalling ignorance of the things they need to know to make informed decisions when they vote.

If free classes were formed in community centers and other venues, to teach non-partisan classes to adults of all ages in civics, American history, politics and any other related subject, would you volunteer for one of them once a week?

I think it's time to stop the dumbing down of America and to start smartening them up.

1. as a community center manager...
how would you get them to attend? People who are recruited by way of a flyer saying: "All appalingly ignorant voters, meet this Wednesday" are unlikely to attend.
peace

oh, and to answer your question--sure, I'd teach or attend.

3. I don't think ad hominum attacks would work.
You could appeal to them with something that would make them think, yes I would like to know that.

For instance, "Do you know what really happened at Pearl Harbor? Join our American History class for the answer to this and many other questions about how we got to where we are now."

2. I have, and would again, volunteer for adult literacy programs.
I'm uncomfortable with teaching things like civics & politics. I know the basics but am too terribly self-conscious.

5. Whatever you know, you can be sure it's more than they know.
Although I'm not a teacher, I have always found that when I tutored someone in a subject, I learned much more than I did studying on my own because I had to prepare myself first before I tutored the student.

4. I'd volunteer to teach the Constitution. Very few people have
actually read it. I'm regularly told about things in the Constitution which are not there, and allegations that what is there, is not.

6. A class on the Constitution would be a class I would attend,
although I have read it, I really need someone to explain to me what it really means.

7. If you get the chance, go to a local law library and read some of the
critical Supreme Court decisions, they are amazing. Ask the law librarian for help, they always know the most about what to read.

reading, I will do that. :-)

8. I do teach on weekends and evenings.
What I hate is when I have to teach during the workday.

And returning students need night and weekend classes.

9. In a heartbeat!
I wish there was a recognition that more people NEED this kind of education.

10. It would have to be voluntary on their part and and
admission on their part that they have patches of ignorance about these things. However, if one person takes the course and can recommend the course to another person, it could start a movement of people who want the knowledge they are missing.
