Wedding of Mary Kay Letourneau and former student shrouded in secrecy
Wedding of Mary Kay Letourneau and former student shrouded in secrecy

By Melanthia Mitchell

ASSOCIATED PRESS

May 20, 2005

SEATTLE –

<snip>

Letourneau and Vili Fualaau have been in the national spotlight since she was jailed in 1997 for raping Fualaau, now 22. The couple has two children together.

<snip>

Letourneau, now 43, and Fualaau first met when he was in the second grade. Their relationship became sexual when he was 12 and she was a 34-year-old married mother of four, a teacher at Burien's Shorewood Elementary School.

<snip>

Letourneau was pregnant with Fualaau's first child when she was arrested in 1997. She pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree child rape and was sentenced to 7½ years in prison, with all but six months suspended.

<snip>

Within weeks of her release, she was caught having sex with Fualaau in her car and ordered to serve the remainder of her sentence. She gave birth to the couple's second daughter while serving time.

4. I know I won't be watching this farce on TV. If we had equal justice...
...she would still be in prison, were all child rapists belong for far longer then 7 years!

This is a travesty of justicer in worst order and sets precedents that we ought not be setting for future child rape cases .

5. Is this what neocon 'no regulations' are going to mean. I thought
one was not allowed to profit off a crime?

24. I 'll say!!! Did your best friend have any comments on what
this "kid" and Mary Kay were like? Personally I think Mary Kay is so profoundly disturbed I have no words to describe it. I remember her being interviewed a long time ago in jail or somewhere. She said that when she started having the affair with the 12 year old "well, you know, he was really mature for his age." Bwaha/barfo. Oh, that makes it okay.

6. That will be the end of the 'romance'
kids and laundry and no sneaking around and not illegal and tv and boring.....and....I predict MK will find herself a nice new young teen to seduce.

12. That wont be easy. She is banned from teaching and she isnt 35 anymore.
But it is certainly possible.

No way this marriage will last, as the groom was said to be out sewing his seeds with many a young lady in High School, while his sweetheart was locked up in a prison cell.

Cheating will be the order of the day in this case, sadly for the two children involved.

16. I wouldn't be surprised
If he cheated on her while she was in jail and couldn't be faithful then I wouldn't be surprised. Sure, some people can change but I'm not holding my breath on this guy.

7. The damn judge had given her the seven and half years the first time
if only because the kid would have been a legal adult by the time she got out.

18. How does it do that?

(Mandatory DU disclaimer as required before one states one's opinion when said opinion may be in the least controversial: I do not support rape, rapists, child molesters, or miscreants of any stripe, smell, or color. I also am not a fan of media circuses<circi?> )

How, exactly does this set any sort of precedent for anything? She raped him (Statutorily). Several times. Got warned (institutional error to not punish the first time). Raped again. Did time. Released.

Boy grew up. Reached age of majority. Chose to marry her.

Two adults with one hell of a fucked up background get married.

It turns my stomach.

But it hardly affects my life. And certainly sets no precedent.

19. It sets no precedent? So this case is not the first one involving a..
an adult, educated married female teacher with access to children of pre-adult age, that resulted in a very light sentence for committing not only one, but TWO felony acts of child rape?

You have, of course, read all related court decisions and realise that this case will only help the next child rapist/teacher to defend thier actions in court and recieve a lighter sentence then would have been offered before the MKL decision.

Thats why we call them precedents.

They affect future court decisions and/or reversals.

But then, I take it you are not an attorney, else you would understand that already.

20. The court case and her sentence may or may not set a precedent
but to conflate the later marriage with the earlier court decisions is patently wrong. They're unrelated. The legal aspects are a tragedy.

The marriage is a side show.

And were this woman not an attractive, skinny, blonde, white woman, nobody would even have heard of it. Except maybe as some obscure smith v jones citation in some young lawyer's brief to his boss.

So I return to my original posit ......

This matters not a whit. Unless you're saying the gub'mint shouldda prevented the marriage through some sort of prior restraint ...... ?

26. The suit by Fualaau and his mother was an utterly cynical money grab....
They knew they would win given all the publicity about this case.

As for his mental state, it will be revealed when these two get out of
the realm of fantasy, and into the day to day reality of marriage.

and she was wearing Vera Wang.
I'm sure the media paid for the whole bash.
Now if they would spend as much of their time and energy on why the Chimp took us to war I wouldn't be so angry.

29. This Woman Is the Product Of Prominent "Conservative" Repukes
Edited on Sat May-21-05 10:38 AM by K8-EEE
Her dad was in politics here in SoCA and her mom was a talking head in the 70's on the local political forum "Four For All" speaking against the dangers of "radical ideas" like feminism for families & children. Her main thing was that women should not work outside the home.

Natch the dad turned out to have a gnarly private life, this guy was a pervert and a half. I always figured she was abused in their picture perfect suburban home. She is damaged goods too be sure.

Good, clean, wholesome marriages like this one or Britney's are the foundation of our god-fearing country. We can't have gays and lesbians threatening this sacred institution! :sarcasm:
