The Cowardly Conservatives |
|
The vast right-wing landscape consists of a strange coalition of the greedy rich, blantant racists and homophobes, intolerant fundamentalists, and traditional conservatives.
When 40 years ago, the Democratic party consisted of an unlikely coalition of Communists, leftists, southern bigots farmers, blue color workers, humanists, Roman Catholics, and traditional liberals, elements of the party banded to together to push out the radicals (such as the racists and the Communists).
Today's traditional conservatives are not brave enough or principled enough to stand up to their party. They fail to keep the extreme elements of their party in check.
Each day they fail to stand up, those elements gain more power. We've already had physical threats against judges by very prominent leaders (like Delay and Robertson) and the attempt to overturn over 200 years of history to impose on us lifetime appointments of extremist judges. There are too many examples of abuses to list--but from lies to theft to pollution to media fraud, the list is frighteningly long.
What we see today is that the traditional conservatives are sitting back and doing next to nothing while the Republican Party becomes taken over by radical elements. This has parallels to what happened in Germany between the 1880s and the rise of Nazi-ism.
The failure of traditional conservatives to stand up to the excesses in the Republican Party is a moral failure that risks haunting them and destroying the America we know. Granted, progressives need to do more, but if we do not find people with guts within the Republican Party, it is unlikely progressives can do enough.

1. I'm not holding my breath... |

I'm not holding my breath because, right now, they are only coming for the gays and the liberals. I think the moderate conservatives feel they are far enough down on "the list" so they feel they can tempt fate and/or play with fire while they get their agenda(s) pushed through.

That's brightened up my day. The one thing that gives me hope for the US, though, is that there's no deep-seated hatred and anger like there was in Nazi Germany. Apathy can probably only be stretched so far: but that's still too far...

3. Traditional Conservatives haven't changed--they're on their high horse |
|
complaining about a high school year book whose front cover is printed in Spanish and all that nonsense. They too are against gays.
Times have changed, Conservatives haven't. Conservatives once supported this country with actions. Now they won't pay taxes to support bush's war, they don't volunteer to fight in that war nor do they pay for bush's debt.
They do sit by and watch as bush shreads most of the Conservative ideals like taking responsibility. No question, they have no morals.
Conservatives should have no credibility, but we shouldn't be surprised that the press gives them a voice. Look at Jerry Fallwell, he's twice said very stupid and harmful things.

5. the july 1944 assasination plot against hitler |
|
was basically derailed by one guy, a career army officer who demanded proof herr hitler was dead; the plotters hesitated too long and 'order' was restored over the phone....what's amazing is how the plotters, all dedicated professional killers, still lost even a semblance of guts, perhaps it's not unusual but they were the german army's top command in berlin and they seemingly were in panic mode the whole time (rommel was not there, but was in on the plot)....i always recall that story when i see the big tough law'n'order men etc supporting bush; most haven't the courage of a common street protestor when faced with uncertainty
