Did Clark Lose his Chances at a DU Endorsement Today? |
|
Edited on Fri Sep-19-03 05:21 PM by usregimechange
Voted for Reagan and Nixon??? "Clark, relaxed and chatty, portrayed himself as a different kind of Democrat, one without strong partisan impulses. He said he "probably" voted for Richard M. Nixon in 1972 and backed Ronald Reagan." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A32450-2003Sep18.html

Uncle, LOL, UNCLE!
There are at least TWO threads on the Reagan/Nixon thing.
Some people around here really have Name In Lights Syndrome.

15. Would you vote for Karl Rove |
|
if he threw his hat in the ring as a Democrat?
'The guy can win' isn't quite enough.
(Disclaimer: This was NOT meant to equate Clark with Rove)

Reagan voted for FDR 4 times, for Harry Truman in 1948 and for Helen Gahagan Douglas for Senate in California in 1950. These facts do not change the fact that Reagan is a hero to conservatives. As for voting for Nixon, Nixon was a liberal on domestic policy, pursued detente with the Soviets, and cut the Penatgon's budget. Clark could simply say that the Republicans moved away from the centrist stance of presidents Eisenhower, Nixon and Ford. He could write off the Reagan vote as a youthful indiscretion. Hell, my grandmother voted twice for Reagan, and hasn't voted Republican since. Hell, everybody voted for Reagan in 1984.

I have great respect for the sane military officers who stand in the way of the neo-conservative assault on reason. Clark seems to come from this tradition. I believe it's probably the case that his Republicanism was very organic and non-ideological. I know men like this, and they're not rightists.

10. Affect in the General Election? |
|
Would such information swing Democrats to Bush during the general election if Clark is the Democractic candidate? I doubt it, more likely it could swing some Republicans to Clark, though with a minimal effect. More importantly may be the impact such information could have with independents, who do not consistently vote along party lines. An independent may positively view Clark as 'not the typical politician.'
