Christian Reformed Professor Backs Gay Marriage
26 May 2005

A professor at Hope College, a Christian Reformed college in Holland Michigan, has a book coming out next Tuesday which supports gay marriage. In What God Has Joined Together? A Christian Case for Gay Marriage," to be released May 31, psychologist David Myers said research has shown strong marriages, heterosexual and homosexual, benefit society. Myers, an elder in the Reformed Church of America, urges church members to reconsider their opposition to gay marriage.

The book is causing causing quite a bit of controversy in conservative West Michigan. While the views of the religious right remain in the majority, we are seeing increasing signs of dissent. As a sign of how things are changing, in 1995 Christ Community Church in Spring Lake, Michigan was forced to split from the Reformed Church of America largely due to its acceptance of gay members. Last week a sizable minority of students and faculty members at Calvin College in Grand Rapids protested against George Bush as he delivered the commencement speech.

1. they're going to say he's not a real Christian
Anytime someone does something while claiming to be a Christian, half of Christianity says he's not a real Christian.

Liberal Christians think Pat Robertson isn't a real Christian.
Conservative Christians will think this David Myers isn't a real Christian.

Why can't we just acknowledge that religion is a cover for the beliefs people already have, and debate issues on their own merits rather than what some ancient desert tribe had to say?

2. Harder with him
Of course anyone can say any idotic thing the want. However it is harder for the Christian Reformed to ignore this challenge coming from someone with his credentials in their church.

3. WOW
My mom grew up in this church, so half my family is Christian Reformed. This is huge. I wonder how that will play out.

4. It is huge
I'm afraid that those who aren't familiar with the Christian Reformed Church won't realize how big this is. Until I lived in West Michigan I wouldnt have had any idea how siginficant this is.

Shortly after we moved out here, not knowing better, my wife applied for a faculty position at Hope. She was turned down due to not being Christian Reformed. Note this was a position in nursing, so religion is hardly relevant to this. Of course it was probably for the better as she wouldn't have been happy in that atmosphere.
