phonics to whole language in the 1980's really screwed the pooch
Phonics: Each symbol (letter) has a sound which are then strung together to form words which can be sounded out (understood) by one who has never seen the word before.... as long as they know what sounds the letter represent (teaching someone to fish)

Whole language: Word recognition... you only know the words you've seen before (giving someone a fish)
