"Iraqi forces launch crackdown; *al Qaeda* defiant" hmmm???
Edited on Sun May-29-05 04:00 PM by mzmolly
"BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi forces on Sunday launched their biggest security crackdown since the fall of Saddam Hussein with the start of a sweep by 40,000 Iraqi troops who will seal off Baghdad and hunt for insurgents.

Over the next few days, Iraqi soldiers would block major routes into Baghdad and search the city district by district, looking for foreign Arab fighters and Iraqi guerrillas, Iraqi officials said. They would be backed up by around 10,000 U.S. troops deployed in the capital during Operation Lightning.

Al Qaeda's network in Iraq said it had responded with a new offensive of its own. Insurgents killed 20 people across Iraq, including a British soldier.

An Internet statement from the group said its offensive was led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi "under his planning and supervision." "This ... is in response to the futile plan announced by defense and interior ministers to seal off Baghdad."

Al Qaeda defiant? Anyone else note how insurgents AKA Iraqi's are slowly being morphed into "Al Qaeda" in the media?

Pretty soon we'll be fighting "Al Qaeda" and not "Iraqi insurgents" at all. Hmmm, I guess using the phrase "Al Qaeda" makes the rampage more palatable to the "merikun publik" ? :eyes:

1. I noticed that too.
When I signed onto Yahoo, I did a double takes.

Two different groups. Two different countries. All smashed into one headline.

3. insurgents?
Maybe a few, but most are Freedom Fighters or Patriots. Their country was invaded. A puppet government was installed. Iraq is being brutalized by the invaders on a daily basis.

4. Agreed, I prefer "Iraqi's" to insurgents.

But soon insurgents won't be "enough" they'll all be called Al Qaeda.

ON edit the definition if isurgent:

Rising in revolt against established authority, especially a government.

Rebelling against the leadership of a political party.

I guess were insurgents too ey?

7. I believe an alternative viewpoint may be
that al-queda really is behind much of the violence in Iraq when one recognizes that al-queda rents space at the CIA.

13. So sad.
And were funding this bullshit murderous rampage. :( It's one thing to be aware of all the horrors in this world, it's another to be an unwilling party to them.

14. "We're an empire now, and when we act we create our own reality."
- senior Bush aid to Ron Susskind

That quote's got some attention. It explaines so much. Look at this google search.

17. Yep
but the people I've heard who are there or have been there recently say foreign fighters are not that numerous. The overwhelming majority are Iraqi. Got that from a marine and also I heard someone from some agency indicate the same thing. I do think, however, more are coming from the south from Saudi Arabia. However, the "insurgency" is primarily Iraqi.
