Ya know what scared me about the DU server issues?
I had just finished reading this thread:
http://upload.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=3751757

and was thinking about B* wanting to atke over and control the "internets" like he has already done with every other medium.

That was when I started having problems. I was thinking "holy shit, has he started already?"

I still can't help thinking this was the action of some Freeper hacker as a Memorial Day prank. Or maybe they are jealous because our Vet thread will soon be pushing 900 while theirs is a little over 200.

Or, it could be just a coincidence...:tinfoilhat:

1. Naw, if they were even capable of doing that, they'd have done both.
That kind of tampering is way to easy to trace. I doubt they're that stupid...after the Watergate thing.

2. Freepers
Discovered ping. They, I think, just pinging the servers to death on Memorial Day weekend after the thread we have of tons more verterns than their thread listed.

As for Bush wanting to regulate the Internet, good luck. It's international, no one owns it, no one regulates anything other than protocols used (TCP/IP), and Web hosting in other nations would increase.

3. Oh not - they would never get away with it. The owners of the blogs
would make that the story. Relax. Not an issue.

5. I hope you and Tux are right. BUT

if B* has full access to ISP information he will know the owners of and posters to every website operating within the US. And although the Internet is International, he could conceivably force every US ISP to implement filters (just like AOL already does so that you can only visit "AOL approved" sites). You know, to "protect Americans" from child porn sites... as well as anything else he doesn't want us to view.

Edit to add: don't kid yourself that you're safe from detection because you're using proxy servers or DHCP. There are ways around those. ISP's keep records. Teh same recrds B* is trying to gain access to.

13. I wouldn't care. As far as I am concerned they FBI should have
access to web info. Not the ISP number without a good reason. But access all the same. I don't want terrorists to be emailing each other and talking at boards and not be under the gaze of some authority. Sorry - I have been the victim of crime. You end up on the law & order side of things.

It would be unconscionable if the some government authority at this time in the US was not looking into terror networks using the internet.

6. I was responding to that link as well...
...when the server problems clobbered me. When defragging my computer did not help my paranoias began creeping in. Can't imagine why, must be a case of "the war jitters" or some such.

7. Alternate site for info?
I was desperately going through my large list of political sites and blogs hoping to find some information about why I could not get on DU.
Is there any other site that we have where such information is posted?

10. I'm running Mac OSX and I had problems last night
I was trying to access DU from 10:30 to 12:00 pm PST and I had lots of problems. Every once in awhile it would work fine for 10 minutes or so. Then it would just hang again. I got an error message every time I tried to post a message, but the posted message always made it. I'm sure the problem was at the server level. The operating system or application you are using to view the site would have no impact on how things worked or didn't.

12. Intermittent slow response or no response.
Skinner has posted some announcements about it. Since the ISP is closed until tomorrow, they can't get the server recycled until then.
