OUTRAGE: Texas governor to sign anti-gay legislation AT CHURCH!!
http://media.benedek.com/images/Rick+Perry+200x120.jpg

(Austin, Texas) Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Sunday will sign legislation sending to voters this fall a proposed amendment to the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage. Rather than putting his name to the bill in his office Perry has decided to sign the document at Calvary Christian Academy in Fort Worth.

The decision has angered moderates in the state who say the governor is blurring the line separating church and state.

"As I recall, Jesus threw the money changers out of the temple, and I wonder how long it will be before people of faith get fed up with opportunistic political campaigning in their houses of worship," said Kathy Miller, president of the Texas Freedom Network.

Perry counters that the church school is the appropriate venue for "values-related issues." "A church is an appropriate place to come together and celebrate a victory for the values of the people of Texas," Perry said.

Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 03:48 PM by KamaAina
Wasn't he about to be enmeshed in a sex scandal? The sort of thing that is frowned upon at places like Calvary Christian Academy (unless you're a repuke of course)?

edit: I'm out of the speling bee :(

6. From the article --
"A church is an appropriate place to come together and celebrate a victory for the values of the people of Texas," Perry said when questioned about the decision by the media earlier this week while he was at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in Fort Worth where he signed a workers compensation bill.

Mr. Perry, your values are NOT the values of all the people of Texas, or those whose religious ideas are loving and inclusive, and not EXclusive. What an outrage!

17. I know a little about Calvary Cathedral
They welcomed religious talk radio host Bob Larson back in '98 or '99 to perform exorcisms on churchgoers who were allegedly demon-possessed. A small group of folks (including ginbarn and I) protested the event because of evidence that Larson had financial shenanigans up his sleeve.

I seem to remember that CC pastor Bob Nichols prophesied that the church would stand up to any attack thrown at it - shortly before a tornado gutted the building in late March of 2000. Oops.

Now the church has a new building at a new location, and I'll bet Nichols is just peeing himself in joy over Perry's impending dog-and-pony show.

74. it's far worse than you think
My husband's father, a Vietnam vet, believes church and state should merge.

MANY people believe this; it's a result of (I think) putting completely unqualified persons in charge of teaching US Government classes.

The uneducated will believe, quite easily, that there's no wall between church and state, that the filibuster is rarely if ever used and should be abolished, that the man holding the office of the Presidency should never be questioned or challenged by the press, that the press should never publish information from 'an anonymous source'....

Since nothing really gets taught regarding these things in high school government classes, people end up not understanding the most basic concepts of our Constitution. A belief that church and state should be all buddy-buddy is the end result.

The effort to dumb down our schools is one of the stepping stones to theocracy, and the theocrats know it.

That's EXACTLY how it went.

I don't know if I like or dislike the fact that I studied the buildup of the power of the Nazi party so much a few years back.

Sometimes I do think ignorance must be bliss. But...sigh....I'd rather know.

And things right now are NOT good. VERY not good.

This church thing is despicable. I don't know whether to scream in anger or cry for the death of the constitution.

27. Gov. Goodhair is playing to his political base
Kay Bailey Hutchinson may run against Perry (aka Gov. Goodhair) in the GOP primaries. KBH is the most popular politician in Texas right now and a primary fight could be a tight one. Perry's base is the religious right who tend to vote in disproportionate numbers in the GOP primary. Perry is playing to that base.

44. Perry is a POS
This is bad enough and embarrassing enough for sane Texans, but it gets worse. We also have to watch Texans flock to the polls and vote this bit of discrimination into law.

The only good new is, believe it our not, there was WORSE anti-gay legislation that didn't make it through the latest Texas legislator's cluster-fuck. At least the Session is ended and no more damage can be done through that body until the next time they puddle together.

The other bright spot is Perry is going to get torn to pieces in the repug primary, he may still win, but it will be fun to watch.
