Lori Hacking's Husband
Was found guilty and sentenced to 6 years to life. People can get longer in prison for selling prescription drugs. Where is the problem here? Do we value human life too little or do we put too much of an emphasis on Reagan's war on drugs? I say both. If it were here in Alabama, he would be subject to the death penalty. That would be my preference anyway. Your thoughts?

1. Just to clarify - 6 years to life. And the judge said he would
do everything he could to oppose parole for this slimeball. I agree 6 years is terrible but hopefully he will spend the rest of his days rotting in a hell hole.

Think the state agreed to this to avoid the expense of a long drawn out trial, the dude plead guilty so at least we are spared the Peterson/Jackson/OJ MSM treatment.

2. Ahhhh this is a tough one
I think that Mark Hacking has some serious mental problems.
Delusions of grandeur etc.
With that being said, I don't think that Lori Hacking's parents wanted a pound of flesh from this man or his family.
Their families were close. They realized that both families lost someone in this tragedy. His brothers asked him to confess so that both families would not have to go through any more pain than was absolutely necessary.
Parallel this with Scott Peterson.
Mark Hacking confessed without a trial, without a public spectacle, and with the two families able to continue a relationship.
I truly feel sorry for the people involved in this, but this whole thing was handled with such grace--a grace I am not sure I could muster.
If her family is okay with that sentencing--which I would expect they are--then we should just accept it and move on.

3. No Thoughts, Just an Opinion
Despite personal preferences, he was sentenced in accordance to the laws of the state of Utah, that's one of those funny things about States Rights. He would have been sentenced to death here in Arizona as well, but he was tried in Utah and everyone will just have to learn to live with the sentence he received. Besides, whether he gets out or not will depend on the parole board. He could very well
be in prison for the rest of his life!

As for the value of human life, lately it depends on the skin color of the person in question. The Religious Right was up in arms about
Terri Schiavo, but didn't even raise an eyebrow about Sun Hudson.

Some Americans really got upset when Timothy McVeigh referred to the
children that died in Oklahoma City, as collateral damage, but these
same people don't seem to have a problem when that term was used for
Iraqi civilians killed by US bombs. In this situation it wasn't skin color, as much as it's another culture.

So the value of life for some here in the U.S., is dependent on skin color and culture. If you don't fit in there cookie cutter view, then your life has no value.

5. It's OK to kill somebody if you have a penis and the person you kill
is your girlfriend or wife. It also helps to be white. Most white guys don't get the Scott Peterson treatment and even he would have gotten off much easier if she weren't so pretty and he would have chosen a less sentimental date than Christmas eve.

One of my best friends was killed by her "boyfriend" and he got 3 1/2 years in prison after he promptly found God. He shot her point blank in the head because she refused sex. She was 18.

In South Carolina it is a felony to organize or participate in a cockfight BUT ... beating your wife is a misdemeanor.

We still do not value our women in this society.

7. You speak the truth. Partner abuse laws need to be much harsher.
The rationale, well intended, was that you'd never get women to call 911 if they knew hubby was going to do serious time. Well, those days are gone. Many women now will do it.

The beatings women endure from their husband's is an outrage. What if that same moron husband went next door and beat the daylights out of his neighbors wife? He'd do some serious time (if the neighbor didn't administer the appropriate justice first).

It's got to stop! Excellent post

10. Its not okay to kill someone if you have a penis
that is the most ridiculous bullshit, especially if you're using this case as an example.

Hacking got the mandatory sentence in Utah, a state not known for liberal laws (Utah used the firing squad as late as 1996). Once he plead guilty, thats all there was to it. Thats the law.

6 years to life, but I guarantee it will be closer to "life" than "6."

His crime was savage. But it wasn't about his penis.
