Dear Red States
We're ticked off at the way you've treated California, and we've decided we're leaving. We intend to form our own country, and we're taking the other Blue States with us.

In case you aren't aware, that includes Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and all the Northeast. We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially to the people of the new country of New California.

To sum up briefly: You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states.
We get stem cell research and the best beaches.
We get Elliot Spitzer. You get Ken Lay.

We get the Statue of Liberty. You get OpryLand.
We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom.
We get Harvard. You get Ole' Miss.

We get 85 percent of America's venture capital and entrepreneurs. You get Alabama. We get two-thirds of the tax revenue, you get to make the red states pay their fair share.

Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the Christian Coalition's, we get a bunch of happy families. You get a bunch of single moms.

Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and anti-war, and we're going to want all our citizens back from Iraq at once. If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They have kids they're apparently willing to send to their deaths for no purpose, and they don't care if you don't show pictures of their children's caskets coming home. We do wish you success in Iraq, and hope that the WMDs turn up, but we're not willing to spend our resources in Bush's Quagmire.

With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80 percent of the country's fresh water, more than 90 percent of the pineapple and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation's fresh fruit, 95 percent of America's quality wines (you can serve French wines at state dinners) 90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools, plus Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Cal Tech and MIT.

With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88 percent of all obese Americans (and their projected health care costs), 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of the tornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all Southern Baptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh, Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia.

We get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you.

Additionally, 38 percent of those in the Red states believe Jonah was actually swallowed by a whale, 62 percent believe life is sacred unless we're discussing the death penalty or gun laws, 44 percent say that evolution is only a theory, 53 percent that Saddam was involved in 9/11 and 61 percent of you crazy bastards believe you are people with higher morals then we lefties.

By the way, we're taking the good pot, too.
You can have that dirt weed they grow in Mexico.

Sincerely,
Author Unknown in New California.

just as soon as she graduates. If not Washington State then hopefully back to the Northeast which I miss (I moved to Arizona due my father's job and I've hated it since)

21. Welcome to DU.
I don't want to spoil your fun but do you have any idea how hard we in the red states are working to simply keep our states from dropping over the abyss? This is old, it went through DU about 25 times before people started getting mad about it.

Just remember, we are trying our hardest. Not a day goes by that I am not doing something for the Democrats or for gay rights or for justice or education, not one single day goes by that I am not bouncing my head off that same damned brick wall. Many of us are doing that. I just got back from a meeting doing that. Then I come here and see this again. Think about it.

I do mean the welcome, we need everyone here but this, well this just pisses me off all over again.

I live here because it is my home, if I wanted to live in a blue state I would be there already.

25. Does this mean blue states keep all their pop music too?
Cuz, you know, we don't need any.

And remember that heating oil shortage last year? Not our problem. Come to think of it, break out those hybrids, cuz you're gonna need em. We have all the oil pipelines and the best supply chain technology. That lettuce you want to deprive us of? Guess what it's gonna cost your east coast buddies once Canada realizes you'll have to ship through them.

33. There you go...
Alaska may be a red state, but the people up here aren't all that bad, and we came really close to electing a Democratic senator last year. Only some last-minute shenanigans by Ted Stevens got Lisa Murkowski elected, and she's turning out to be somewhat moderate (a surprise). I noticed that she didn't vote yesterday for Judge Pryor. I'd rather she voted against him, but at least she didn't vote for.

36. Any statisticians around?
I'd like to know..

Have you ever seen those studies done where the 50 states' educational systems are compared (test scores, etc)? And those studies where the U.S. is compared to the rest of the world?

I'd like to see a Red versus Blue analysis in this context. The U.S., last time I looked, was somewhere in the high teens (19th) on one worldwide test score ranking. I'd love to see where theoretical Red America and Blue America rank worldwide. How far would Blue America move up - into the single digits, perhaps? And how far would Red American fall down? 30's? 40's?

As a lifelong Red Stater, I'd like to see us try an election advertising experiment where we compare various quality of life issues between the two groups of states. The experiment would be this:
- we pick a number of races in districts where we probably won't win (where we're basically long-shots).
- we advertise on television in 15-second segments. The idea?
A car pulls-up to an intersection in the middle of nowhere. To the West is a barren desert. To the East, a fertile plain.
Narrator: "Red States have {these statistics}, Blue States have {these statistics}; which direction do you want YOUR state to go in?"
- Make various versions of the ad, covering all sorts of issues. Child health, education, environmental quality, financial health, etc.
- then, see if the race ends-up any closer. Or if we actually pull-off some victories.

I've always wanted to try this. Where we actually say to the voters, "yeah, we're Democrats, and yeah, we DO know better than Republicans. The results speak for themselves."
